Grey Area for the quality of the weed and honesty of the owner (not the prices tho unless you haggle)
and
Barney's lounge cos I know the owners son and always get a warm welcome when I arrive. Note - Lounge, not coffeshop, bar or any of the others. The others are a bit too touristy for me.
grey area definitely was the best for me. took forever to find, but made it in the end on the last day, the owner took great care in making us feel warmly welcomes, showed us all his danks, and sold me a lil weight even though he wasn't allowed to by law.

ok, try kashmir lounge, barneys lounge, umma gumma (now a damkring) and amnesia. All nice laid back and chill coffeshops out of main areas.

Old Church coffee shop - Woman behind the counter was abnormally nice and gave me more than I expected for the price. Also drinks were decent and there is a great seat upstairs by bob marley to look out over the church plaza.
Central Café - overpriced but had a decent chat with the bloke behind the counter and now go here for my 1st joint after walking outside central station.
Nice selection of bud and hash, I always try and pinch the window seat with the stools, I love watching the day go by mashed!.
Rick's Café - The man behind the counter scared me a bit, he seemed V grumpy but after a chat and him passing some v nice northern lights my way he turned into a nice old man :D If I'm correct they have a balcony that looks over the canal's so you can sit with a J a drink and observe the world as it goes by, bliss.
Ny,
**after typing this I realised.... i'm an old fart**
The first coffeeshop we went to in the dam was the bulldog. stupid fuckin idea that. If i had to choose a favourite... it would be a battle royal between "the greenhouse" on harlemenstraat and "resin" that isnt too far off... saying that tho, the awesome guys in the grey area let me off a few euros after me handing him like 10 for sumthin for 13 euros. Dutch americans are nice people.:D

always my first point of call aswell. the guy who's usualy in theirs a good bloke aswell, if you sit next to the counter and after youv got matey with him ask if theres any Dutch scuff about (not the tourist shit) if your lucky he'll sort you out with a smoke to remember. getting excited thinkin about it now, time to book a flight me thinks

Dampkring, Rokerij's and Grey Area for best weed selections we found.
Old Amsterdam and Old Church coffee shops for best places to chill out.
Go to www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/map.html and it has a map of the center with many of the good coffeeshops on there. Click on each one and it tells you how good each one is and how good other people thought it was :)
Hill Street Blues because the weed is good, the prices are good. The weed is weighed out per order and you can always touch and smell the product before making a choice.

Grey Area, very overrated and not comfortable imo. Same goes for most of the Centrum/tourist area ones.
I like a proper seat when I'm chilling, and prefer not to have backpacks jooking me on the back of the head
Basjoe's takes some beating. And some finding ;)
The best coffeeshops are always the ones off the beaten track; cheaper, quieter, better quality. You have to explore to find the hidden gems :)

Just a quick Q: Do you have any map links to grey area, dampkrings and some others?
The only area of Dam I know well is red light hahaha!

Depends on what your after...
Greenhouse lounge is nice to sit & chill upstairs with a smoothie.
De Kuel 4:20 is good (was better when they served beer) V.good weed & advice there + cake shop opposite.
Amnesia is good for chilling.
Hunters bar - if you like the music playing - good gear.
Bulldog in red light (the one with the narrow alley by it) - not to buy gear but to watch the hookers in the windows & time how long the guys are inside & think 50 Euros - I could be stoned for hours for that!
My favorite is still De Kuel - usually no tourists, good gear, Vaporiser, scope, scales, free roaches, freindly guy behind counter, gave me a discount on 5g of caramello.

Loved the doors, well chilled, friendly staff. Not a great selection, but well priced and good quality. Even let us skin up with baccy and toke inside. One down side not very comfy unless you can get the sofa. Bonus was no loudmouth yanks

Anywhere they sell the Moonshine (skuff) is my fav. Twae de Karma is nice and small and friendly. (maybe thats not the correct spelling/pronounciation of the place..)

Abarxas, just down from Dam Square in a side alley, really comfortable seats upstairs and a nice selection of weed.
Dampkring has the best quality, wins the cup every year

sweeet, thanks I knew it was something like it ;) :bong:
Abraxas is a nice shop - kinda felt a little bit 'cool', if you know what I mean. But certainly a nice interior. Can get busy.
For weed i found de Dampkring to be the best. But when I was there I went to the little one by the station, and it got very full. I hear it's now a 3-storey glass modernist setup so I would recommend checking it out.
My favourite to chill would have to be Hill Street Blues. I wasn't a massive fan of their weed (to be fair I only tried some of their cheaper stuff during the very last hour of my last visit) but as a place to go and smoke some nice gear, i think it's pretty much unbeatable. It's very big and only fills up at the busiest times... but the staff are very friendly, they do mean milkshakes and smoothies AND you can write your name on the walls.

cant remember the name of it but just behind where the tour boats leave from, they dont sell weed but you can lie on big cusions in the window & watch the world go bye.........or what was most amusing for me......watching two cops on horseback passing the window while i drew deeply on a bong & then noticing my cigerettes were on show on the table...... ahh Bollox!
i liked dropping into hunters during the day just around the corner.
Myself & my partner got one of those cycle taxis out to the edge of the red light district & did a coffee shop crawl back to the hotel.
I really need to get back, tokers mecca!

YEA!! The first time I went to Dam (been twice now) I went here the evening of my birthday and there and was greated by great staff and me and my GF got baked playing some board game till close. I have no idea why but is always my fondest memory of dam.

I'm just back from the Dam today, and the nicest coffee shop I went to was the 420 cafe, just off Damstrat. They had a really nice selection of weed and most of it seemed to be organic, plus their nyc diesel was sublime.

I haven't been to Amsterdam for over 25 years. Is it true you can't smoke a spliff with tobacco or have a beer and smoke these days?

Following on from my previous post - Can you still buy genuine hash in Amsterdam. I mean like Lebanese hash actually from the Lebanon or real black from the Himalaya's and not from some Neder-Factory? Same with herb? Is it all locally grown, or can you still buy genuine Thai Sticks or real Durban Poison from Africa?

Chopped the ladies yesterday and off to the Dam tomorrow......all good!
Firts stop will be The Rojkery for some Heavens Delight.
Sweeterb, it is indeed illegal to roll your joints with tobacco in Amsterdam - although it's a rarely enforced law. A lot of people just keep it discreet, and some places have separate sections for smoking tobacco. It's also true that there are very few, if any places with both a coffeeshop and alcohol license :( This just results in waves of drunkenness and stonedness hitting you one after the other(if you go from coffeeshop to pub to coffeeshop to pub :))
But yeah there are still a lot of nice imported hashes available :smokie:

Thanks for answering. It looks like Amsterdam isn't as much fun these days, but that seems true everywhere. You can't even smoke a spliff at a gig no more. Good news about the hash though. I think I might just pop over for the weekend sometime. The last time I went was in the 80's and we arrived in a mates 26 ft yacht after sailing across from Harwich and berthed in a marina just the other side of the water behind the central station. It only cost a few quid a night with all facilities, right in the heart of Amsterdam.
Before that I used to work on cruiseships and, for a while we cruised the Baltic using Amsterdam as the home port. We'd moor up again behind the station. We sailed right up the ship canal from Ijmuiden. weird as it was a BIG ship sailing along with cows and people and villages within feet either side. I think this was before coffee-shops because the only way I could score was by asking hippies. Finally some guy in a head shop showed me where I could find some good stuff but it took most of the day. I first went to Amsterdam as a teenager in 1972 and slept in Vondel Park with all the other hippies - good times.
PS I think this site needs a "shaking head in despair" smiley. :)

Baba is a good place to pop in to but there always packed. it had to get a seat.
as a group of people it would be no good.
as a girl i adore betty boop so when i went this year i had to go to bettys cafe but when i got there it was a total dissapointment it was dirty small and lacked personality i was well gutted.

Am posting for the hotel where we returned after a indonision dinner, for a rest before going back out there :)
Got here yesterday and have visited a few.
First stop was the central, lovely selection all 12.50 or 25g bags for various weights of different things. No smoking inside though.
Also visited hill street blues, looks cool and good to chill on sofas, my friend had some lovely white widow there.
My favorite for weed so far is Crush, wonderful Jack Herer and Blueberry.
fav overall has been Easy times, good music, extreme sports on the big screen.
