Ever been mugged or seriously harassed in dam?

Just wondering how much hassle you guys get in dam.. From drug dealers and other twats.

Ive only been once and was only with 1 friend (so not like a group of people). And during the day it was ok, we occasionly got asked to buy drugs but the dealers seem to not hassle you if you just ignore them.

But at night, we fell asleep 1 afternoon at about 4pm (both were mega stoned). And we woke up during the early hours of the morning about 2-3am and we decided to go out. What a BAD choice that was lol!

The SECOND we stepped foot outside our hotel we were stopped and asked to buy drugs. This happened every 2 seconds seriously, its easy to ignore them but it sure anoys the fuck out of ya.

We got followed a few times by gangs who offered drugs, but as we ignored and walked off they start shouting stuff and start to follow us. Got loads of threats of being stabbed for money etc.. But ignoring the bastards was working at first.

Then at around 4am we ran into a bunch that came out of nowhere! By this time the streets were almost empty and they pulled knifes out and demanded cash. I only had 20 euro on me and decided to hand it over as I belive these people are crazy enough to kill you if you dont. My friend lost 50 euros, which was his money for a prostitute so he couldnt get one in the end.

Nope, but then i dont tend to go to the red light district, in my advancing years i stick to the more civilised areas (with better coffee shops)

not exactly bad experiences but we have been harassed by crackheads a few times... lol

the only time I've ever felt un-nerved in the dam was the 2nd time I went I was only about 19 and we walked round the narrow ally way of red light district and there was literally barely space to pass people!

anyway there was a group of young blokes in the corner where the allyways joined and they sort of surrounded us asking us loads of questions and at the time there was only me and one other female mate I got a bit para but we weren't alone in the allyway as some others turned the corner and we legged it.... maybe we were lucky maybe I was just para but I had a real bad feeling that night, & I'm not usually one for para

but we stay away from those area's at night now...

I would suggest exercising the same precautionary measures in the dam as you would here, any red light district is gonna throw up 'potential grief', just try Soho, London after about 2am. I would rather be in the dam, thats for sure.

Carry a kosh, not for threatening, but for whacking, so you can do the offs, a bit of distraction, i keep a kosh in the car, and I carry another 'personal safety' device with me at all times anyway. These days chavs/charvas/skallys and the such think stoners are an easy target....lol, most anyway. However with my advancing years now, i never get any grief anymore, not that i ever had much anyway, the only grief i have ever got is from drunk dickwads if i go on the lash, which is now about 3 times a year lol.

Just don't put yourself i a position to be in danger, its simple..and tell your mate, have a wank, its safer, and a hell of a lot cheaper...

I always carry some form of defence in my car, some twat tried too rob me and my mate at night whilst in my car having a doob, picked the wrong fuckin car, one swing near his face with a wrench (not trying too hit him, well not the first time) and he was runnung like a scalded dog, silly chavs :kill:

Leidsplein (sp?) is quite a more chilled out place i found although there wasn't many great coffeeshops just a few (easy times and the rookies imo were the best in the area).

Yeah man its deffo better than the UK, the weed selection is fine, its just the coffee shops are a tad on the small side but the area is about a 20 min walk from dam square so it aint far, oh and theres a burger king as well ;)

I've stayed in Leidseplein a few times bertie and its pretty good still quite lively really they have street performers on and stuff
plus I don't like RLD on a night now so we stayed in the square in Leidseplein and had a awesome time ;)

Haha thank god they got decent food outside the RLD. All the got in the red light is cakes, single slices of pizza and febo which I remember being like a mcdonalds vending machine lmao.

Yeh its normally 50 euros, mine was 50 and she was quite a nice girl and they are quite safe the legit ones in the windows, dont get some old crackwhore off the streets tho thats just dirtz!

But yea dam is lovely I love the way everything is old and crook'ed, has real character.. Also 99% of the people are very very nice and happy but theres alot of dickheads out there..

the way i see it is if u go out and someone comes up to u and threatens u. let them go ahead with what they say, because 99% of the time if u switched it around and threatened them theyd shit themselves. i remember in my own town i got mugged at knife point. (they took a hat i was wearing, pointless, yes.) but the feeling of being 'done over' was worse than the feelin of getin beaten. personally id rather be beaten or stabbed than have some cunt get the better of me and take my stuff.

RLD can get a bit hairy after 3AM at that time of night your better off somewhere like Liedesplien where its safer (you wouldn't walk round the RLD at home with cash in your pockets - unless your a trucker with some rope & a spade).

Lived in the 'Dam for seven years, in the RLD, and never had no probs. Was working on the 'Zeedijk', right in the centre, and the only time you ever heard of something going down was with some stoned or pissed or both tourists. Just cause its the 'Dam and you are stoned, just use common sense. Don't go to the dodgy areas late at night same as you wouldn't in any unfamiliar city. If you just keep in your mind that you might be on a weekend and totally fucked, the city lives on same as any other

in the early 80's at least 50% of friends were getting threatened wiith knives but usually in nightclub/bar toilets where you cant run & 1 ended up with a bad slice down his cheek that remains very noticeable to this day, i myself only had the dodgers try & sly stuff out of any pocket they can & ive got to admit the brassnecks are quite good at it, it has definetely calmed down a lot nowadays go 4/5 times a year but hitting 40 now so know a lot more, my rules are never go out near dam square/RLD or even central after 2/3 am, no offence to the guy that recomends carrying a cosh/weapon but i think thats a stupid thing to do, i admit it would be handy at times but getting banged up isnt good in adam (i know, 21 days :( ) and its things like that that will see tourists being banned (which some want & are still trying to do) and the relativley brilliant welcome from most in adam turning into resentment, not good for them or us, i'd say use common sense & unless hotel & bar/shop are safe & close by dont venture out at 3+am & keep the cosh for hometown, back in dam in 3 days & if i get mugged then ive just either been stupid or plain unlucky.

My mate got mugged in Amsterdam when we went a few months ago, to be fair he was walking down some dodgy road at 4 in the morning! They try and imtimidate tourists by pointing to people up the road and say stuff like "my mates will kill you" I seriously doubt they'll even touch you tho

if you're on your own i've found if you are feeling a bit para just walk with purpose like you're a local and have somewhere to go. doesnt make a blind bit of difference to anyone else but stops you feeling like a paranoid freak lol

It doesnt matter where you go in the Dam, there are bastard muggers everywhere. I lived there for 3 months and had endless trouble. At one point (unforts i was fukd on mushrooms) i was dragged into a small boat, stripped while having a gun held against my head (stripped of all my possessions including my clothes), pistol whipped and thrown into the water. BE VERY CAREFUL IN THE DAM IF YOU ARE NOT IN A LARGER GROUP. When I was working out in The Netherlands, we were living on a barge during the second half of my stay and we were moored up somewhere in or around Arnhem.
The walk to the center from where we were moored up meant you had to walk past what was supposed to be some kind of rehab for crack heads.

Well outside were drug dealers and the kind of hookers you don't want to party with for fear of getting more than you bargained for.
Me and a few of the lads were walking into the center one evening around 10pm I think when were approached by the seediest looking geezer you could imagine and asked if we'd like to score.

Both of us declined and expected to be mugged and murdered on the spot.. But he just said ok and we were on our way.

Couldn't beleive it. I thought we were dead for sure lol.
Needless to say the large Amstel we were on our way to meet up with went down super fast!

We were lucky, it could have gone another way.

Best bet, keep your witts about you and avoid non tourist areas.

quite a large group of us went to dam one year but we went over as 2 groups and only managed to meet up like 1 and a half times lol.

I dunno if i was just being para or what but myself and the 3 other people in my group were walking along one night and a group of three guys barged passed us, and when they got infront of us one of them broke off and came around behind us, i think it was only me that noticed.... hence why i dunno if i was just being para and stoned lol. ......

but

when i turned and looked at the guy behind us he pointing at us so that the guys infront could see us, although he could have just been checking out the girl in our group lol....

nothing came of it..... everyone we spoke to could not have been nicer.
