Here is my question, for my next grow i want to use metal halide bulbs for veg, but cant be doing teh extra cost of lights as my kit is already over a 1000, can you use metal halide bulbs in an hps kit if the wattage is the same?

So my 600w hps, unscrew hps and put the metal halide in, veg for 4 weeks, then use until plants show pistol and then switch over to hps for rest of flowering?

Cheers in advance for all helpful replies.

Refer to the Ballast, Maxibright compacts can power HPS & MH, A lot of Ballasts can do both but do check first as theres some that cant. (Mainly older ones)

I have a 400w and have used both in it dont see why it should be any differente with a 600w.

Check the label on the ballast or read the manual - mine states MH/HPS on the box. next grow I'll be vegging using a 250W MH and switching to a 400W Sunmaster Dual spec for flowering (ballast is 250W/400W switchable).

I was wondering if mine might poss do MH too.
I've got a 250 hps ballast, its a centure lighting one. Just a plain white metal looking one. The label just mentions HPS though. Its only about a year old so not that old. Reckon I could chuck an MH in there? Would love to as just upgraded my space so can ditch the cfl now but can't afford yet another light

Yes mate. If you look further down the list, it looks like they sell them with a HPS and a Mh bulb together (the one with the code 196169).

If you haven't bought your kit yet then I can reccomend the Lumatek dimmable ballast - it runs MH & HPS and there are two versions 250/400W & 400/600W so you can save a few quid on the electricity by vegging with a lower wattage MH bulb.

I found the Diamond reflector cast a good even light pool but did trap the heat a bit more than my old reflector, but overall I'm happy with it.

Search the site and see if this would be a better option http://www.greenshorticulture.co.uk/Grow-Lights-182/Reflectors-471/Parabolic-Reflector-1146.asp

Another option - especially if you have a HPS only ballast is to use the Sunmaster Dual spectrum bulb as it has a modified light output with added blue spectrum and can be used for the entire grow.

Parabolic all the way mate. My mate has the diamond, I have the parabolic. He regrets his decision, the spread of the 1M parabolic is immense. Heat also mainly goes out the top middle part of the shade. Can't rate it enough
