View Full Version : removing the smell by masking it with other plants?
does anyone know how well this would work?
im planning 4-6 flowering plants at one time and need to hide the smell.
i am concidering getting a packet of random herb seeds, and growing various herbs in my room so that the room always smells of plants. any opinions?
(i was thinking lavinder and basil).etc.
Not a bad idea, get some Thyme, Sage, Basil, Lemongrass etc. and keep gently bruising the leaves on the plant. However - most weed smells pretty strong in late flowering stage, choose your strain carefully for low odour.
im just using random seeds unfortunatley, but yeah thats the kinda thing i was thinking. > + it gives me an excuse to have some soil and pots and stuff around.
maybe for the last month i could get something stronger to mask the odour. any organic ideas??? something that wont ruin the taste or smell of the bud!
Do you watch Weeds? The "expert grower" on there has a bunch of lavender planted outside the grow house...
I grow lavender and basil with my tomatoes on my balcony. They are small and would not, in my wildest dreams, cover up the smell of a grow. I think you'd need a pretty sizeable forest of herbs to cover up the smell of our herb :)
Just play it safe with some ventilation and a carbon filter.
i cant fit carbon filter or venting.
this means making an advanced grow-room.
where-as im just hoping to get 4 in my closit.
i didnt think they would cover it, well not in the last 6weeks.
i think il need something for the last 6weeks to mask the smell. ;)
Make your own CF, then it can be any shape or size you like.
Cornflakes packet filled with activated carbon and a couple of PC fans would do. There's nothing technically difficult about them.

You should listen to this guy he could grow a plant in a matchbox with fans filters, the lot.:mr:
you are missing the point,
carbon filters fit over air intake and outlets, to use one the space needs to be 90% airtight for it to be effective.
as this is a wardrobe, and most definatley not airtight, there is no way i could make a carbon filter. it would require drilling holes in rented property, buying another wardrobe, putting a tent inside the wardrobe, and all kinda things like that. + having the noise of a fan.
but hey, if u can think ov a way to use a filter that works in a non-airtight box, that is also discrete, let me know.
i just need a way to disguise the smell of the weed, thats all.
im hoping herbs will help and give me an excuse for having soil n plant pots n stuff.
but i think i need another way for the last 6weeks of the grow.

I would recommend Rosemary, I'm a gardener and its the first thing I smell in any garden with it in - it stinks within 2 metres so in a room should do the business. Also lovely on abit of lamb or chicken.
Why dont you burn incense aswell? I'll probably get a carbon filter myself anyway, but I've started burning a few sticks of incence everyday in advance so an odd smell wont be out of the blue.
Having an excuse for soil and pots about the place is a great idea...
With the DIY CF I meant just a little device that filters air just within the cupboard, not evacuating air outside of it... It'll prevent smell build up... anything else that leaks can just be disguised with whatever.
I think for 4 or 5 plants you are going to get a stink building up. If you came home after a weekend away the smell will be quite distinct :)

Carbon filtering is a method of filtering that uses a piece of activated carbon to remove contaminants and impurities, utilizing chemical adsorption. Each piece of carbon is designed to provide a large section of surface area, in order to allow contaminants the most possible exposure to the filter media. One pound (454g) of carbon contains a surface area of approximately 500,000 mē (125 acres). This carbon is generally activated with a positive charge and is designed to attract negatively charged water contaminants. Carbon filtering is commonly used for water purification, but is also used in air purifiers.
Carbon filters are most effective at removing chlorine, sediment, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from water. They are not effective at removing minerals, salts, and dissolved inorganic compounds.
Typical particle sizes that can be removed by carbon filters range from 0.5 to 50 micrometres. The particle size will be used as part of the filter description. The efficacy of a carbon filter is also based upon the flow rate regulation. As water is allowed to flow through the filter more slowly, the longer contaminants are exposed to the filter media.

Thanks for the reply, but do you have to use ducting? Does the fresh air come out the tent and go into the cupboard or what? Sorry just what to know in simple terms how you set one up.
Has anyone tried using those air purifiers to get rid of the smell, I was thinking I could get a small one and put it next to my plants in the closet, and wrap another carbon filter around the output...

Ozone generaters and deionizers work very well at killing the smell, you can find them in pub/bar and public toilets and you proberly know how bad they can sometimes smell.
HEPA filters aren't bad either, I had a friend who used a car one in a computer case grow, might be an idea though he only had one plant..
