sounds to me like over watering not allowing to dry out:confused:

Do you have drainage holes in the bottom of your pots? If not the soil could be too damp, which in a warm enviroment would be ideal conditions for this 'green stuff'. Also dont forget to use a mix of 70% Soil to 30% Perlite to aid drainage. If you could get a couple of pictures for up then im sure one of us can help :) Also you mention useing 'pop bottles' , i would cover the sides to make them light proof, root systems dont need light.

If youre growing in clear pots then the light will penetrate them and get into the sides around the damp soil.

This will cause algae to grow as it does in most damp, light environments.

You should really have lined or painted (non-toxic) your pots first. I suppose if you paint them on the outside you don't need non-toxic.

Apart from the algae growth, roots need a dark environment otherwise they will star to turn green and nor work properly.
