GW Pharma forced to hold back on cannabis treatment

The Multiple Sclerosis Trust reacted angrily yesterday to news that the Medical Regulatory Healthcare Agency, the UK's drug watchdog, is demanding more tests on a treatment for the condition derived from cannabis.

Savitex, an oral spray developed by the drugs company GW Pharmaceuticals, is now unlikely to gain regulatory approval in this country until 2009 despite recently winning full regulatory approval in Canada.

GW Pharmaceuticals said yesterday that it had withdrawn its application for regulatory approval in the UK and Europe pending further tests in order to satisfy the MRHA.

In a blunt statement, Professor Mike Barnes, a trustee of the MS Trust and one of the UK's leading neurological rehabilitation experts, claimed that the evidence of Savitex's efficacy was already"compelling". He said: "It [the research data] showed that, on average, half of the people with MS who tried Sativex gained some benefit. There were no safety concerns. Despite this the MHRA has asked for yet more data ... it is our view that Sativex should be licensed and become available ... for patients with spasticity due to multiple sclerosis."

GW Pharma expects new data to be compiled within 12 months and plans to re-submit its application for approval as soon as the research is completed. It will recruit 200 new patients for the study, in addition to the 1,200 people that are already using the treatment on a named patient basis in the UK.

GW Pharma has had a licence to grow cannabis in the UK for nine years, and despite investing significant sums it is yet to make a profit. However, the company has recently signed a number of high-profile distribution deals for Savitex with major pharmaceutical groups, including Otsuka in the US, Bayer in the UK and Canada and Almirall in Europe.

Savitex has also been developed to treat cancer pain. A spokesman for the company said yesterday that the decision to withdraw its bid for regulatory approval "follows constructive and detailed discussions with regulatory authorities in which they have provided a clear path to approval for Sativex".

Campaigners for the licensing of cannabis-derived treatments for conditions such as MS have won some support from MPs, but medical authorities have so far proceeded cautiously.

Yesterday's announcement sent shares in GW Pharma to a new all-time low, 27p worse at 65p, a fall of more than 30 per cent.

G.W Pharmaceuticals Files Sativex® Regulatory Submission

    20/05/2009

Porton Down, UK, 20 May 2009: GW Pharmaceuticals plc (GWP:AIM) today announces that it has filed a regulatory submission for Sativex® for the treatment of spasticity due to Multiple Sclerosis. This submission follows the recent announcement of a positive Phase III trial in this indication.

The regulatory submission has been filed in the UK and Spain under the European decentralised procedure. The UK regulatory authority, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), is acting as Reference Member State and has validated the application.

It is expected that an outcome of the regulatory submission will be known towards the end of 2009 / early 2010.

Following approval in the UK and Spain, submissions for approval will made in additional European countries during 2010 under the mutual recognition procedure.

Sativex will be marketed in the UK by Bayer HealthCare, and in the rest of the European Union by Laboratorios Almirall S.A.

Dr Stephen Wright, GW’s R&D Director, said, “We are pleased to have completed and filed the regulatory submission within a very short period of time of receiving the latest positive Phase III data. We look forward to working with the regulatory authorities in their review of the application.”

GW Pharmaceuticals Announces £8m Milestone Payment from Almirall

    01/04/2009

Porton Down, UK, 1 April 2009: GW Pharmaceuticals plc (GWP:AIM) today announces that it has received confirmation from its licensing partner, Laboratorios Almirall S.A., that it will pay to GW a milestone payment of £8 million. GW will receive the payment within the next few weeks.

Under the GW-Almirall contract, this milestone payment became due in the event that GW obtained positive results in its recent Sativex® Multiple Sclerosis Spasticity Phase III trial and, in addition, Almirall considered that the data was sufficiently positive to include a country within their licensed territory (Europe excluding UK) as part of the resultant Sativex regulatory submission. Following their review of the complete data from the positive Phase III trial announced on 11th March, Almirall have now confirmed their positive opinion of the data and that they wish to include Spain in the forthcoming regulatory submission.

GW expects to submit the regulatory submission in Q2 09 to the UK and Spain under the European decentralized procedure. Following approval in the UK and Spain, GW and Almirall intend to expand into other European countries under the mutual recognition procedure.

Justin Gover, GW's Managing Director, said, "We are delighted that Almirall share our positive view of the Phase III data and confidence in the prospects for regulatory approval. This milestone payment further underlines GW's robust financial position."

Good read - but I feel annoyed a pharma company are trying to close the market on medical cannabis by "patenting" their invention.
