would running the water I use through a carbon filter e.g. brita filter soften the water?

I am using the biobizz range and my plants have been suffering from the start, hard water area here, I have ordered OT bloom nutes but they wont be here for another few days and the ladies are due a feed.

How can I soften 10L of water, there must be a DIY solution.
