Too much air movement?? I'm guessing that you are saying that it caused the damage. Air flow increase is needed and necessary to both dry it out and to try to help stop it going further.

it's pretty obvious in the last pic that the curve of the large piece of hydroton pretty closely matches the shape of the damage to the stem so it has been rubbing for quite some time . Unless he's in there all day moving the plants about it's pretty logical that it's the fan thats causing the issue . You can also see he is piping water straight into the top of the pot which is keeping the stem too moist and making the problem even worse . G
