Thumbs up Topping & Fimming Your Plant/Plant's

Topping and Fimming of your plants need not be the headache most make it out to be.

Simply follow the instructions below and your well on your way to being a professional in Fimming and Topping.

    Topping a Plant

    1. Locate the very top of your plant and cut through the main stem just below the newest growth. This should be done after the 3rd or 4th leaf set but can be done at any time after the 3rd leaf set.

    2. Shows Plant Top cut off and where the 2 new Branches that will form a "Y" in the main stem will grow from.

    3. Shows the newly topped plant after 2 days of growth, notice the Y in the Stem Forming.

    FIMMING A PLANT!

Fimming is actually no different that topping, what fimming does is virtually the exact same thing only your leaving part of the new growth. This only takes of part of the new growth and actually topping the very very new growth which is very hard to see.

What this ends up doing is making it seem as if your getting 4 new tops right next to eachother when its actually only 2 at the very top (like topping) but since it was cut so closely to the next newest set of fanleaves 2 branches which would have formed there anyways seems to make it look like there is 4 new tops.

This is how you go about doing this.

    1. Locate the very top of the new growth

    2. With a clean sterilized scissors, Fold the fan leafs over and cut approximately 80% of the new growth off the plant.

    3. View from the top showing the Cut

    4. View of the Cut section after 2 days growth, showing the 4 new growth shoots (branches)

Thats IT!!!! you should be well on your way to Topping and Fimming of your plants.

If you have any questions dont be afraid to ask.

It's all to do with the amount you remove. Fimming removes only a small amount of the newly formed leaves right at the top, where topping removes the entire top part..

What asci has said, also it can aid in your plant putting out extra shoots if done right.

That doesn't mean that you will get more bud from your plant/plant's, only more growth tips.

when you top or fim a plant dont u run the risk of yielding less bud because you've destroyed essentially the best cola on the plant. i've heard a lot of people say that you should only top the plant IF they're getting to tall for the space you have. ive also heard that removing growth from sidebranches is a good way of getting a bushy plant as everytime u remove a part of stem it will form into 2. then u can cut the 2 new growths which will form into 4 and so on...

you would top at the end of vegging ONLY IF you think the plant will become too big for the space you have during flowering, im not sure exactly how taller a plant would get during flowering but if you think it will be too big then top your plant before you put it on 12/12.

Can someone make this a sticky, I'm a little afraid that when it gets bumped to the next page it'll be kind of lost.

Cool, im glad to help mate.

Topping is not as bad as it sounds and looks. I can remember the first time i chopped a head off a beautful plant and almost cried until i seen the results after a few days, i've never looked back.

One thing to know is that some strains do take to it better than others, i.e if you know the strain you are growing is stress sensitive then topping wouldn't be advised.

I always top my plant's without any problems. I like to top them so you get 4 to 6 main cola's per plant which also helps with getting the most light to you plants and it also helps with airflow. It also helps lower any risk of bud rot, the reason is the cola's you get are not as dense as one main cola would be. You share out the one fat cola between 4 to 6 so to speak.

It won't take you long mate and you will be trying all different techniques, it becomes all part of the fun of growing.

You will find a technique that suits your needs best and then you can stick to it because you will find you can get the most out of your grow kit and plant's.
