Just thought I'd share how I start my plants off IN A SOIL GROW.near enough everything other than putting the seed in the hole an watering I've learnt from the good people on here so won't be taking any credit for the info your about to read,I'm just passing it on as there seems to be a lot of this question lately and i don't see a thread on it in the sticky section but all else is coverd.so here goes....

    Step 1,
after you have mixed your soil and perlite and have filled your pots NEARLY to the top leaveing some space to back fill later on,an inch or 2 will do. (il get to backfilling further on) and have gently firmed and flattened the soil down your ready to water.

    Step 2,
water the soil well with around 250ml of water,if you have root stimulant like canna rhizotonic for example then add that to your water beforehand, the seed will love waking up to the feed.

    Step 3,
Make a hole in your soil no more than half an inch deep, some people like to do it less than that but I go half inch.then drop your seed in.cover gently with soil and that's it.
I like to position my seeds on thier sides as in pictures I've seen roots grow upwards first then down so rather than it being end up and the chance of the root breaking the surface and it killing itself I go with the sideways approach.

YEAH YEAH I know all that your saying!.

I know that! so the info from now is the reason for this thread, that's why there's no pics to the above.everyone knows how to plant a seed.its the looking after the seed from that point on that's the most important time and to give your plants the best start in life.

    So step 4,
You now need a 500ml coke or lucozade bottle/s these will be your alternative to a proporgater.seedlings and young plants need high humidity to get the best start in life 70% is your target at this stage.take your bottle and cut it in half.i like to use the lid end so keep the lid end and lid on.hopefully you've rememberd where you planted the seed as the bottle needs to be positioned over the top of the seed in the soil,so to make the humidity high inside the bottle spray it lightly with water and put the bottle over the top of the seed and gently twist the bottle so it digs into the soil making it nice and sturdy.now you have a seed with it's own little greenhouse.leave under the light of your choice.some just cover the pot with cling film and put in a dark warm place till the pop thier heads up but I prefer to give light like in the natural world.

At this stage you you can take a preventative measure against fungus gnats and cover your soil with SHARP sand (wash the sand first),and a layer under your pots aswell.this will suffocate thier eggs stop adults laying eggs and also if any do manage to hatch when they try to climb out through the sand the sand shreds thier wings and they can't fly and die.doing this has the added bonus of keeping your soil nice and moist so you may not need to water the seed for a week and it should of grown by that time into a seedling.also if you do get gnats flying around spray the flys with raid fly spray and even give under the pots a quick spray.sticky fly strips are good also.

    Step 5
be patient and don't mess about with them!!!.only to spray the domes twice a day to keep the humidity up.keep check to make sure the soil is still moist inside the dome.if it drys give a little water but only a dribble, you don't want to drown them.if you don't use the sand method then spray the top of the soil with water to keep it moist as it will dry out around the dome.

    Step 6
As soon as you see life unscrew the lids on your bottles to let oxygen in to the seedling.i keep the lids on for a few days just resting on the tops.after a day or two I take the lids completely off.keep spraying the inside of the bottles and using the bottles till the plant no longer fits in the bottle.as soon as the leaves are too wide take away the bottle.at this stage put a fan near the seedlings blowing over the top of them, just so they move a little, this will encourage the stem to strengthen an make a nice strong trunk for them to grow on.

By this time you should have quite a large seedling, you may be able to do the following before this stage....if your seedlings are quite tall then put some extra soil an perlite mix in the top of the pots to BACKFILL and keep them sturdy an help them stand up aswell as using the pots max fill.if you've used the sand method then just fill in with the sand already in the pot or add more sand if needed.if there's no need to back fill then it's fine don't worry.

    Step 8
More of a tip than a step but it's very important to do and a bloody excellent idea!...if you have a seedling that is very tall and a bit wobbly or with a bowed stem take a straw and cut it to the size of the stem and then slice it length ways.this will be support for your seedling as it may fall over an die so take the straw and VERY CAREFULLY wrap the straw around the stem.you will have to push it into the soil litrally a TINY bit jus so it stands nicely, remember the roots are just under it and you don't want to cut thru any roots!.

    Step 9
So now you've done the hard bit and have a nice healthy strong seedling.
To keep it this way your best bet and friend is a humidifier.i have a 3.2 ltr from Argos it was £20 and great bit of kit.as your seedlings are now out in the conditions of your grow space an not under the domes they need good conditions to carry on being their best.you should have a hygro meter in your space to check conditions for your plants, you need to set your humidifier so that your hygro meter reads 70% humidity or as close to that as poss.

    Step 10
Watch them explode with foliage enjoy the ride and give them all the attention they need
Looks like my humidifier is coming out of storing tonight as I am just waiting for them to break soil

Very useful info for newbies like myself, cheers. What soil do you use and to what ratio do you mix perlite?

Hi I’m totally new to all this...
Using 4pot autopot system 1.2mx1.2lm grow tent in a 2mx2.2m room, 600w HPS light, using trop mix 70/30 with shogun coco nutrients A/B.

Starting from seed (Feminized), I’ve put my seeds in a glass of water in my kitchen just over 36 hours now. Not much seems to be happening.
