Being 3 weeks in id lollipop them and lift there skirts up, get a good under skirt air circulation and then look from above and punch a hole through the middle , even pulling and tying colas Apart for each other!
Just remember not to go crazy all at once , think the golden rule is not more than 30% or a 3rd of the plant at any one sitting!

I usually pluck if 50% or more dead. No reason to keep them on there the plant will try and keep them alive.

Makes sense to open em up to me you can just add the difference when you look in at the light penetration alone i love stripping them back and for sure have only seen improvement.
The lux meter won't kid when it's deep in the canopy so defoliation all day long for me, of course there's a limit lol
