I've never thought it through in that depth

think your thinking about it too much! lol

    time line-

    Dark
seeds crack (container, dark) 1-4 days

    Light
root 3mm (into root cubes, soil about 2-3cm deep) moved out of the dark and under the light (but light switched off) day 5
first sign of life, 2 little Cyclodone leaves, light gets switched on (little 250w maxibright prop light) about a foot away. day 6-8
slowly move the light closer (you'd be surprised at how close you can get with a little pc fan running)

Seeds will germinate in the dark but the confusion is night time, seeds are in darkness while under the soil, the light above is detected by the seed which makes it want to come up, if you have light on them they will come up quicker and stronger by theory, but then why do seeds germinate and come up in the dark...because science is bullshit and ither way works , just be patient mate, dont worry to much on the conditions for your seed, it will do it's thing, once those hormones activate it that's it, it will grow, just take care in the seedling stage, the better start they get the better your plant will develop, providing you don't f**k it up lol

its not the light or dark that germinates the seed, its the warmth and dampness that sparks the engines, but in nature its down to the plant genetics whether the seed requires to be in the soil (dark)(tomato, chillie, weed) , or just on top of the soil (light) like my wildflower garden. but your right doesn't really matter it's the next stage that you want to get right otherwise your likely to have problems down the line

From what i read it should be covered, so inside it's dark, but light so it has something to grow towards
