He's just gone into flower so if he uses a medium strength soil not a hot one then may be ok. I've had undesirable smoke once or twice potting up only a week after flowering. Like Beth said , repot , throw some quality compost in there also , with some bone meal!! water with a solution of Seaweed to prevent root shock and youll be golden .
