    Surely you can get really close to the plant with the led lights?

    Hell yeah, the balance between how close and spread is the key limitation to distance from canopy in most instances.

    Plus I'm thinking with it being side lights I'm not too fussed, don't know if i should hang them normal or sideways

    For my pot plants I have the lamp hung at 45' and it give side and top coverage, I just have to remember to rotate the plants in the conservatory every few days.
