Oh i also have all the totes connected together from underneath to 1 tap that has a pump connected for emptying, makes it so simple and pretty much empties them completley.

i do less plants but larger so need plenty of room for root space.

i like the bottom tap idea so when you drain they drain properly, ive seen many builds but most dont use a bottom tap
My entire capacity is about 130L so I'd say I have 30L in res and 25 in each plant tub.

They are 42L tubs but I'd say that capacity included the lid as its for kids toys and with marketing they want it to sound as big as possible.

Yes I prefer the idea of bottom drains. I also cut back the thread on the connectors so it's as low as possible in the tub allowing virtually all water to drain. What helps is the fitting is also in a dip in the box so it's really low.

In addition the external res is 2" lower which ensures everything drains into it.

I just sit all my plant tubs onto 2X2 timbers and external res just on floor.

To empty I just disconnect the feed pipe and connect a 10m hose that goes into my bath. Next empty it's going on my lawn though to make use of the feed.

My whole tub system cost me about £37 to build. That is just the tubs and piping. Air pump was £46 and water pump about £18 I think for a mj500.

Best money I've ever spent. So much easier than soil. Well it is to me after 15 years in soil lol.

    Should of added......

I also run double returns so the back two tubs are connected to each other then back left to front left and back right to front right then finally each front one to the res.

That essentially gives me two 22mm returns to keep it all even. It's also good backup if I get a blockage for any reason. I won't flood my house.

I use tank connectors so yes a rubber seal. I'm not sure you can solvent weld to tubs as its the wrong plastic.

I've not had a single leak. Just fit them tight onto clean surfaces.

Bottom or side, it's just as likely to leak. No difference. Over flow piping from screwfix is solvent joints everywhere except the connectors. Seems to be holding up okay.

Even if a leak springs it's only going to be tiny.

Connecting to flat surfaces (not curved sides of buckets) helps get good seals.

Just make sure you you got a nice clean fixing, de'bur, an tighten just enough. Not too much, not too loose. The bottom fixings i use have a thick rubber gasket in inside and outside, and found out over tightening made them leak. No weld used anywhere on my system, just compression fittings and hose tails for the spray bars and bottom taps. Was a pain getting 2 inch compression fittings though, but ordered enough to add 2 more tubs to my system if need be
