Always be careful with a ballast. I've got a magnetic one. Was sorting out some cables, unplugged ballast from timer, didn't allow enough time for a discharge for few seconds so started making a crackling sound soon as it was plugged back in. Quickly disconnected it and waited a few seconds.

I have a solis tek and have had trouble with my ballast quite a bit.
Someone told digital they go through a set of safety tests before they switch on, and if any issues they won't switch on at all.
I've had new bulbs that would only work on a magnetic ballast, I bought 2 cool tubes the other day because mine burnt out, 1 for me and one for a mate, mine didn't work on my ballast but they both worked on my mates!
So reading this post had surprised me, I thought the ballast would be the last thing to go 🤔
