I use an RO filter, well in fact I use a 4 stage RODI 100gallon per day filter.

3 stage will still clear out chlorine and most stuff, but won't drop the EC/ppm to 0, a 4 stage will strip everything out leaving pure EC 0 water, PH usually around 6.6.

As the price goes up you are just getting more gpd from the filter, but I fill a 250l tank with RO water, so speed isn't too important.

RODI water has no buffer, so a tiny amount of PH up or down goes a lot further than in tap water, also can lead to issues with PH fluctuation.

Ok thanks for that info so maybe wait and save for a four stage. What's you guys opinions on cheap ec pens?? I can't afford the blue lab pens or meters at the min would the cheap ones like 10-20 quid be enough to get started for a grow or 2??

Cheap EC pens are a waste of money to be honest, they may last a grow or two, but I wouldn't trust the readings without calibrating it every time.

The cheapest you should buy is the essentials EC meter.
