Default LED upfront cost cheaper than HPS? Am I missing something here?

    Hi,
It seems to me that it would be cheaper to implement an LED vs HPS.....

between ballast, hood, bulb, cooling etc. etc. - the led seems like a no brainer...

Am i missing out on something here? Thanks.

Every thing Back Woods drifter said, but your over all cost will cost you about the same, if you are going to match Watt for Watt HPS. Matching Watt for Watt, will cost you a little more than the HPS-MH system. JMO

Od say it would be the same since the cheap leds yield 0.5gpw"advitised". Say 1gpw of actuall wattage led. You cant replace the bulbs on led where as hps you can. Unless your spending big money on proper quality leds like them cxb cobs etc. So hps is cheaprr. I am stuck in my ways tho.

Look at 315w LEC’s. Nothing put amazing reviews so far so I’m just one with 2 in a 1.2 tent. So 630w of light and my 6” fan is barely on keeping temps with the lights at 24*C.
They act like a 500w Hps/Mh each. 1.6 gram per watt is achievable 😳

i like both types of light but you can get a hps kit for £60 nowdays and decent leds start at least £100 so hps is obviously cheaper in itself.

personally wouldnt bother with cheaper leds, theyll become cupboard ornaments soon enough as you learn more and being often weak will make learning to grow harder than with a more expensive one impe.

both will determine what levels of extraction/heat equipment is needed to cope and will depend entirely on your personal enviroment/tent size etc and so costings for that side of things might have to be considered.

plenty of diaries and information across the site,do your research and build a picture in your mind of what will fit the bill and make things easier for yourself,,,and your plants.

    atb chap.

I chose to go the LED route because I wanted a simpler, cheaper and cooler setup. My only tent extraction is a small adjustable axial computer fan with my 300w and 600w LED panels. I haven't spent more than $90 on any of my panels. I'm in New England so heat isn't really an issue. My yields might not be as great as HPS but I'm very happy with what I've built in 3 months time.
