    Default Them cheap fan controllers?

The ones for a tenner or the likes, essentially non variac controllers, how low does the speed have to go before the fans start to get noisy? 30%, 60% 90%?
I'm asking as I need my fan (6" single speed) to be as quiet as possible and as it's a loft grow regulating temps is going to take some doing.
In my mind I have an idea for a two or three stage system for my exhaust fan, full whack, 60% and 30% maybe, or whatever speeds work best. I want build/buy a variac controller for the low speed and use a cheap controller for medium speed if they are suitable. If not then doubling up on the variacs would be the next option.

So how noisy are they in reality?
    Let's get it on!

They’re effectively just plug in light dimmer mate. Fan pretty much buzzes on all speeds under full pelt. They can also be dangerous.

Think the ecotechnics fan controllers are quite highly recommended mate they do in and out fan speeds along with humidity and heater control. I've got an smscom hybrid 4a controller and it's great even running the 8 inch fan at 20% power there's no noise from it at all but their pricey bit of kit. Gives options of 20/40/60/80/100 % power totally silent.

@Ginge - I heard all sorts of bad things about those SMS controllers. They must've upped their game. I had one of their first versions away back in 2008 and it buzzed like fuck. Glad yours works for you 👍

Yeah mines been ok lost , I think they make some cheaper ones I'm not sure how they perform but at 250 notes for the hybrid one I'd have sent it back if it buzzed lol I grew in a shed for 2 years so needed total silence Cos that 8 inch fan wants to create a mini black hole and suck everything in to it on full pelt

Get a variac either build one or you can buy a step transformer type from ebay etc.

Never a truer word. The tenner fan controllers are not good and a bit pointless. A cheaper alternative to the excellent Ecotech is the Inkbird Heating/cooling @£25 eBay item number:122436400841

They are simply on off with both cooling and heating but do the job. I have one in my veg tent.
