    Default GMO Goes Greener

Hello kind people of the talk

I'm looking to be a little greener in general. So I'm hoping to start composting and 90% organic gardening and growing

I've got a darlek style compost bin to get started in the next couple days, I've pecured a small area of front garden that I'll digging and turning first dry day I have off

So I have a million and 1 questions in regards to mycorrhizal fungi and different seaweeds and what kinda things I should and shouldn't be composting really

I will be doing as much research of my own back as possible so hopefully this can become a nice place to discuss all the different aspects of "being green" even if that doesn't mean organic

Let me know your interest and if you know much of any of the mentioned topics as I've got a million things flying round my head, it would be nice to iron some theories out

    ✌❤

    Minor update for yall

I have just started filling my compost bin! It had been sat in the same spot for a few weeks, so when I opened the lid I was very happy to find WORMS! hiding from the rain

So it's only the start and I've got maybe half inch of food waste that I've covered with used potting compost and will just continue to add too

Anyone know if I should be emptying my tea bags and just compost the leaf matter and bin the bags? I've seen many mix opinions on this

    Cheers yall

Avoid adding anything from the onion family (that includes garlic) and anything citrus. Worms don't like them.

Add powdered egg shells. Worms eat them for their gizzards. It also adds calcium to the soil.

Cardboard is also good to add.

I ain't sure my purse string will allow for feeding my plants lobster lol. I'll be growing alfalfa soon, do I just dry it and throw it in? Also gonna start collecting seaweed (I'm fortunate enough to be in a coastal city) which I'll be drying some for extract and compost some of it

I was actually gonna ask you about the worms and onions. I've read a couple places that the other peel is okay as long as it's like dried out but not actually like juicy onion? Someone was saying red onion peel can attract worms?

Oh and I read pet hair can be good in compost bins, I don't eat many eggs so am looking to balance it else where is possible

I'm getting that quick sand feeling already mate.

It all started cos I wanted to farm more microbes in my soil... which lead me to compost your own, which again kinda lead me to collecting/foraging what I need rather purchase it

I have just ordered some pure mycorrhizal fungus, black strap molasses and I've sourced a regular supply of coffee/tea grounds. I'll be collecting leaf litter later today as well as foraging for seaweeds. I've sourced a back up for brown cardboard incase I can't source enough "brown" matter come summer as well as got a source for extra veg waste like tomato and cucumber if I'm not producing much myself

I'm kinda going balls deep tbh mate.

Any knowledge your willing to impart, I'm looking to learn it all hahaha

    What's IPM?

    Thanks for stopping by everyone!

Be careful with seaweed straight from the beach. It will need washing a lot to rid it of any salt.

Personally, I leave out anything onion. Why chance it when there's plenty of other things to feed them.

I have 3 cats, but don't use their hair. We de-flea our cats from time to time, so adding possible chemicals is best avoided. Not only that, it takes forever to break down.

Here's a list of things I add to my wormery...

Coir, shredded newspaper, toilet roll tubes, corrugated cardboard, melon, papaya, figs, bananas, mango, carrots, turnip, powdered egg shell, dolomite lime.

That's not a full list, just the ones off the top of my head. There are things I'd like to add, but don't have them available.

With most of the veg, I grate it and then freeze it. The freezing helps break down the cells, and quicker for the microbes to eat.

I haven't used tomatoes. I've heard mixed reviews about them. Too acidic IMO.

If you go to ASDA around 20:00 onwards, you can get lots of fruit and veg real cheap. The later you go, the cheaper it is, but less choice of course.
