It is a fact that malted barley in the wormery speeds up the reproduction rate of worms I need to go to books for facts though
The ideal ratio for C:N is 30-1 I believe I’ll double check but I’m going to be concentrating on mine from the next couple weeks and trust me that’s where the gold will be made.
I’ll add all my rockdust’s,kelp, neem barley straw organic fish meal after the thermophilic stage, if we do these piles properly they can be done in a couple months but I can’t monitor mine as regular as I’d like so my excuse for last years composting was I went for the cold composting approach lol.

I’d compost anything before it goes near my garden regarding the kelp from the beach and stuff, I ferment most of my nettles and foraging I collect but use some for mulch I planted a good few comfrey last year so in the next couple years they will give me so much mulch it’ll be perfect to start off my leaf mould.

I’ll keep adding shit as I think about it mate or get around to doing my own lol

Nah that's absolutely the reason for this place dude

I get confused between a worm bin and a compost bin. I'm purely composting but I'll not be adding worms, just hoping to attract the right ones... if all goes well I may set them up in there own space but for now they are just doing the heavy lifting

I'm getting the the measurements of my garden area later today so I can plan how I wanna lay it all out.

I'm thinking I'm gonna turn the whole thing over and then build in some raised beds in rows. As it's for personal food consumption I think atleast 50% of the area will go to doing potatoes

Still far to many factor to work out but I'm loving every second!

    Alright then free people!

Got out and done some stuff today. Nice to have dirt on me hands! 😊

So the area I've got to work with is 4mx10m. I've had to section 1x4 at one end as a dumping ground for the moment but I think 9x4 is plenty to work with

I've done a lil doodle to help me plan the actual lay out and this is the area I've got to play with

I've broken it up into 1m squares and 1foot squares as I tend to flip between feet and meters depending what I'm talking about. Ie plants size i usually though of in square feet space but when I'm building stuff like raised beds I always measure in meters. Weird I know.

I'm gonna have a little play with the below pic and try work out how to squeeze all I can out of the area... will report back with something like a plan

Okay... Here's my half baked idea 😂

I've tried to keep it as basic as possible as I always bite off too much and screw it all. So we have 6-8 food crops as well as a berries section and then the circles I hope to have fruit trees eventually as this area is concreted. Along the bottom edge between the circles I have some planter troughs I may add for herbs and chillies.

This doesn't include the compost bin and dumping area which is a 1 meter wide area the runs the length of the right hand side... if that makes sense? 🤔

The design is based on rough area each plant will need also, as the broken line squares are 12 inches it made it alot easier to plan 😁

If I have done something stupid or you can think of a more efficient layout please let me know!!

    Any input in appreciated 😁

I may be getting a little carried away with this atm...

I've ordered my veggy seeds. Just need to pick up some seed potatoes

Tomorrow's mission is to build a worm bin... is it possible to keep this outside or am I better off making space indoors? And do I have to buy a special breed of worm from somewhere or shall I dig through my compost bin in a few days and people can try id worms for me😂😂

Weather permitting I'll get atleast part of the lawn pulled up and may even start knocking together some frame work!

    Waaaay too excited!

Also looking into fruit trees 😂 the list never ends!

Hey G, sorry mate earlier I was mainly talking about using a outdoor garden to provide everything for my indoor garden mate.
Just use the worms from your garden and You can get dendrabena worms mate they will be fine buying some just saves you time that’s all and you don’t want your bin getting too hot or too cold because they’ll escape and or die so think about that when you place your bin. Mines in the front room and has no smell or flys and shit because I dont overfeed or let it get to wet.

There’s other worms like tiger worms that’ll go deeper into the bin but the dendrabenas do just fine and breed like fuck lol.
I got veggie seeds here ready to go but won’t have time to tend to them and I found out last year my window boxes just don’t get enough light ffs.

Comfrey is my main thing I’ll be working with for now in the garden as it just grows itself and I can cut it back 4 times a year for mulch and teas etc.
You can make the garden work for you mate in the end just a bit of graft to begin with, I would look into getting a soil test if your not going to run raised beds.

IPM stands for intergrated pest management matey the teaming with microbes is aimed more towards the kinda gardening we’re talking about now mate

Ahh yeah I get ya. Tbh the compost and what now looks like worm castings and tea will be for indoor use anyway so it's nice to have that multi function.

I will clear a cupboard under the sink for the worm farm. Should be fairly stable there and easy enough to access. And look into where I can get hold of some wrigglers

I do plan to run raised beds tbh mate but just on top of the actual soil if that makes sense... I don't plan to line the beds, it's just there to hold this seasons raised bed then come harvest I'll probably half take it apart, spread all the soil out, turn it and cover till the next season

Would a soil test be costly? I always figured they were only for the big boys

6 hours digging today. I ALMOST finished breaking ground on just the potato section!

That's almost 1/5th total area I set out

I imagine I'll have to break it all, turn it. Break and turn again and it might be ready for the beds to go in

I "plan" to break ground on the rest of it every dry evening this week and then I can enlist the help of some family over the weekend to turn and sieve, weather permitting

Diagram below shows where I'm at 😎

Looks good gmo. How are you planting the sweetcorn? In a single row? Also id be tempted to plant some flowers in and around the area. Try and attract the pests to them before your crop. Companion planting I think it's called. Miracle grow do a wild flower mix in a purple tub you just scatter and rake in. Had no weeds either last year as the soil was full of flowers and veg 👍

    Hey Farm dude,

Yeah I'm just gonna plant a single row (7 plants) as I've never done em before and I they need a good amount of space

Yeah, that's the plan bud, I'm gonna try fill in the gaps with things that'll actually deter pests and herbs and flowers for the bees and me daughter

I haven't fully looking into what companions will be going where yet as ive got a lot more work to put in first it seems but that's for the input and please let me know if there are any other ideas 🖒🖒

You need to plant your sweetcorn in blocks of 4. Like the four dots on a dice if you get me. The wind will pollenate them that way.
Whats your soil like were you are? Rocky, clay, sandy?
Try if you can, save your self some work aswell, planting the carrots in some wide drain pipe like the stuff on the side of your house for the toilet. Fill it with some nice fine soil/compost. You'll grow perfect straight carrots and save a load of space in the patch 👍
