    Default Dual extractor van quieter

I’ve got a 6inch dual extractor for my grow tent but the last grow I used it it was absolutely loud so now I’m going to start a new grow but wanna put the lights on at night so I wanna make a wooden box and put the extractor in that and fill it with sand ? Now would this work would there be any hazards doing this ??

Only if the sand finds its way into the fan, then fan will be knackered. Better off with Rockwool/PIR insulation boards

I was thinking polystyrene inside the box and then some old pillows etc covering the fan

Polystyrene would work but it melts when hot, rockwool doesn't and is 50% air, sandwiched air is a great accoustic insulator. Your loft is probably full of Rockwool

No bags. Leave the top off your box, fill with loose Rockwool (wear gloves ) and put top back on, try fan, if you still hear it pack a little tighter but not too much, you need the air

I've tried a few things to make my mini grow more stealthy. I have a twin speed rhino 4 inch fan and when I switched it on it was noisy as hell. That set me off to build an isolation box. Went overboard a bit... layers from outside inwards consisted of 15mm acoustic plasterboard, green glue, 12mm mdf, 12 to 24 mm carpet underlay and then carpet. Sealed with acoustic sealant.

Tested it with Bluetooth speaker and it works great...

BUT... then discovered that once it's all hooked up it makes barely any difference to my noise levels from the fan. Turns out it seems to be the air movement causing all the noise lol. Honestly, I can have the fan running and notice no difference when I open and close the door so I'm fairly convinced (in my case at least) that attention is best spent on either slowing fan speeds (tho steer clear of them if you use a twin speed model, and avoid the cheap 10 quid dimmers as your fan will hum and possibly pop) or invest in some acoustic/phonotrap ducting.you can also slow it down with a combination of larger venting and reducers.

I'm rambling... too baked. Hope a fraction of the above was worth posting lol
