First time grower led light question

Hey everybody, I've looked through forums and looked through sites and keep finding different answers. I'm wondering for one plant how many watts are needed with an led light? I met a guy recently who seemed to know his shit said he'd grew and helped with grows before, and he's using an led light that's only 18w for 1 plant. It's got red and blue lights for the different stages 5 brightness settings and a timer. I read on one site that 16w per square foot with led is fine, so is this light of any use while it's not too big at least ? Everywhere else seems to say much higher is needed. I'm about a month in and didn't have one yet so trusted this guy's judgement and picked one up as it was on sale for £22 from £60. I've stuck it on mine anyway but I'd like to know if I'm gonna have to buy another light asap or in a month or whatever the fuck, cheers!

It is not the advertised LED wattage you need to look at, it is the draw of the panel when in use....

Ok thanks, so am I looking at 250 per plant then ? And I can't find anything about how much it draws it says it emitts 18 watts if that's the same ?

Aim for at least 100-150w watts from the wall per plant for this old style led. As M_C said first thing you need to do is find the specs and see what the power consumption is

What they mean is, if you buy a 600w LED from somewhere, it is not going to draw 600w from the wall. It will usually draw about 1/4 to 1/3 of that. Ie, around 150-200w. The advertised amount is "equivalent watts" compared to other lights.

Considering you said you bought an 18w light...In short, no that is nowhere near enough. But yourself something like the mars hydro 300w LED. That is fine for one or two plants and is not expensive.

Mine is called a 240w but actual power is 100w.

That's for 1 plant. I think 100w a plant is the minimum really
