Default 250W CFL distance from plant

Hi folks i am wondering if anyone can help me here. I have a single 250W CFL about 8 inches above my seedling. I have done the hand test and it does get quiet a bit hot. I have 1 air moving fan which blows on my light and disperses the heat but its not blowing on my 3 day old seedling. Are there any guidelines to stick to in regards to the light becoming ineffective at a certain height? I fried a seedling by placing it at 3 inches away the heat was too much. Thanks

I have a 300w about 10-12" above my veggies at the moment, big fan blowing over the top and temps still get to 29-30

I would put at 12-15" for a seedling, very easy to toast at that stage

    I agree with MC, I'd have mine 1" away.😉
You need to get your ventilation right the temps will lower. I use a 300w CFL, you must keep it dust free otherwise it really heats up.

Does your lamp sit vertically or horizontally?

I've always used horizontal. Those lamps are too heavy for the reflector and that's a good thing. Get the bulb level and the reflector will be higher on the open end. I place a fan underneath the fitting end so the hot air travels straight up the reflector and away from the plant. Doesn't need to be oscillating either.

Let me see of I've got a pic to show you what I mean. I'll be back😉

Mines sits horizontal. Just like the one Grassmaker posted there only a little bit higher from my seedling.
