Default Self watering system for holiday?

    Hi guys,

Planning to go away for 2 a weeks jolly and was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent / well priced solution for watering? They are soil based girls in 20l air pots, only the 2. They normally get a water every 2 - 3 days. Can anyone recommend something cheap and cheerful that wont end in disaster lol

    Thanks a million!

    I use these :- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Automatic-I...ldL&ref=plSrch

Half price and work well. Can be set for 1hr to 31 day interval.

Watch out though ... 99 sec max watering duration. I grow in coco and use it a 3hrs intervals and have maxed out. As such had to change interval to 2hrs.

You have to get the blumat watering system. I believe it is Austrian design. It's these sensors, water filled tubes with porous stone at the bottom. When the stone dries up it activates the tube to to send water to the drippers. You can adjust the moisture sensor to your desired moisture level. It is gravity feed so no electrical problems. I have a 200 liter reservoir feeding my plants. I could leave plants for a month I think. I use 1/4 my reservoir a week.

It also allows you to keep you soil constantly moist, not wet, so you soil food web can thrive. You never want you soil to dry out but to keep it just slightly moist at all times so the bacteria and fungus can multiply.

I have one of these too, it's a pretty good solution for the £30. The compromise is like jumper says, you can only water 99 seconds at a time at regular intervals. With the drippers stuck in the soil that's maybe 200ml per time, although if you remove the drippers and just secure the tubing to point at the soil you'll get maybe up to 750ml per time. That's total, not per pot of course. Depending how much water your pots actually need that might mean you're having to water little and often and you'll lose the wet/dry cycle to some extent.

You can build your own for about £35ish quid. With a proper pump, feed line and drippers.

That's actually something I've been interested in looking at, although £35 is more than the unit I'm working with, if I had more options to program the timer that would be useful and with some DIY bodging I could hopefully have a more flexible controller. Any recommendations?

I've just come back for a couple of mini breaks and this set up was cheap and worked great

    All Amazon / Ebay
    600LPH pump £8
    Manifold £4
    Timer £7
    Bin 50L from Wilko £6
    Air pump £6
    Cheap recirc pump £5
    Hose pipe
    4mm tube

Accuracy of 1min on timer so can fine tune
