    Default Compost for sowing

Hello, can anyone recommend a compost for sowing seeds?

I have 100% germination with wyevale multipurpose compost, but I'm sick of spending so much time filtering out lumps and barks etc.

I bought some John Innes #1 which really pissed me off, because it's like sand, and the vast majority of seeds I sow in it do not germinate.

I keep reading about BnQ sowing compost, but then I read reports about gnats and flies in it, and being a massive bug-ophobe, that's a real problem for me.

Not sure whether there is a nice and simple multipurpose out there, or whether I should somehow sieve the lumpy mp compost I already have.

looking forward to quick replies as I'd like to plant today. Thanks!

Fine sandy composts are perfect for sowing since they medium makes great contact with the seed and tap root

Its actually more risky to go into a normal mix since the nutrients are loaded higher

Ive had 100% success in wilko 2 seedling mix

I make my own compost . But when im short ill run to local wholesaler for lawns and trees . They have a fine ass Marine compost . Try and find a good Shrimp compost or vermicompost mix it 50/50 youll barely need any feed with a 5gallon/19L pot

Just one thing, the temps need to be in the high 20's. As I recall someone said 28 degrees C.

The best success I ever had was using a food tub, and put that next to the exhaust of my computer where the warm air comes out. It was at the height of Summer so the soil temp for the transplanted seed was pretty warm too, and the seeds survived the transplant and grew.

Other techniques have not exactly had much success.

    Appreciate all the input, thanks.
I do actually grow in coco but i've always started the seeds in little pots of compost. So I'm specifically after something just for sowing, not a full grow.
I usually keep them on top of warm electrical equipment. But as I say, I had 100% success in multipurpose, and since I started using John innes recently, I've ended up chucking about 10 seeds away, from decent seed companies too.
At first I noticed a couple seemed to sink down in the wet 'sand', so I stopped over watering it, but still ended up with seeds doing nothing... although I spose it's possible that it's coincidence.

Wish I'd read about Verve before I went to the shops! I got a bag of Gro-Sure seed compost.
But the verve is half the price so I'll grab that next time (I assume it doesn't need sieving/de-barking for seedlings?)

    Cheers

Edit: just spotted the message about wilko's seedling mix. Sounds perfect.
