I've heard you can bake the soil to remove any critters in your soil.

    Just Google baking potting soil😊

I have always heard to leave springtails alone as they are not doing any damage. Baking soil will kill the bugs and the beneficial microbes. I would only do this for gnat eggs in the soil and then I would rebuild the soil with amendments. If you bake the soil for too long you can make it toxic. Using a thermometer is a must imo. Cheers.

I have had old dry soil pop out gnats. I believe the eggs can go dormant for a while and come back to life when there is moisture. Its either the egg stage or cocoon stage where they can go dormant. I do not recall at the moment.
