    Default Answered: Rhino Extractor Hum

    Hi guys and gals,

I recently purchased a rhino pro filter for my tent and wound up getting a 6in rhino fan with it for a few bob extra, I thought it'd be handy to have an extra exhaust hanging around in case of some emergency but as I've been having a play with it hooked up to a cheap fan speed controller I've noticed that as I start turning the speed down I'm getting a VERRRRY loud hum coming from the unit (the fan itself not the controller). I've got a black orchid 6in exhaust in my groom currently that I have turned right down without having this problem so do you think it's the exhaust or the cheapo fan controller?

    Cheers,

    Beans

Be careful with the cheap controllers. I had a rhino twin pop on me when I tried a dimmer on it... later found out I shouldn't use em with twin speeds, but it did hum before it popped

See mine's only a single speed so it should be fine for me to use a controller shouldn't it? I'll be looking at getting a decent controller come pay day as the quality of the one I've got is already very questionable which has had me on edge for a while

Cheapest model of the SMSCOM single fan controller is about £50, you can get used for about £30

From my little experience I know with my cheap controller I can only turn the fan speed down so low before I risk damaging the unit. Should be ok about half way down

Is your rhino a single speed fan?

I've heard it would be safer with single speed. I've tried it with my crappy black orchid and it hums

I have a 4'' rhino pro and when I updated my fan, there was a loud hum coming from somewhere? So I bought a cheap plug-in speed controller and had a play about but still had this humming sound,it done my fkn head in! Anyway, out of pure chance,i was playing around with my ducting where it blows out and happend to cup my hand over the outlet........No more hum! So now Ive covered half the outlet with duct tape and robert's your mothers brother,no more hum!
