Default Which soil from gardening centre ?

So I read a lot that the pre-fertilized soils from canna brands (plagron, biobizz...) are not too good and overpriced anyway.
I understood a lot of people just use regular soil/substrate/compost from gardening centre.
Can you tell me what to look for when buying such soil ? there are many kinds - soil for lawn, roses, rhododendrones, suculents, palms whatever....

    Thanks

If you are in the USA, you can get (Just Natural Organic), and also WhollyCow peat and cow mix.

Horse and Chicken and Worm casting are all good. With Chicken, you need to get the kind that has been compost long enough that it is not hot Like Black Hen. The regular Chicken shit you just pick up in a bag or farm is very hot and you have to be careful using it, in that form. Here is what I get from my garden store, not hot at all, can use as much as I want. As far as how much peat, I just don't know, I use the Whollycow, and it is premix.
