I know a few people using the cheap ones and they have never had no problems so far! I just don't want to risk causing a fire. Suppose if anything the gro shop owner is an honest person and not just trying to flog you more expensive gear!

I had 3 lights on 1 cheap timer and it got very hot. I checked the amperage rating and learned my lesson. I occasionally check my timers by feeling them. If they are getting hot i would worry. Same with cords. Nothing should be hot. As long as you are under the amp rating everything should run cool.
It is nice to have an honest grow room owner. Never tried to "sell" me anything.

Just read this thread in total amazement!

Growing in a garage is fine... but it's stupid cold outside at the moment & unless your garage is insulated it'll easily be hitting minus something at night

Soooo.... someone recommended heating.... I have a better idea

Grow autos on a 24/0 light scale, it'll get you around spending on a heater (that would probably be the same wattage as your light) & grow you some extra bud too

But that's just me, others have other opinions I just hate the idea of a heater if you could run a light instead - However, this approach only works with autos

If you are worried about fire, check out the automatic fire extinguishers on ebay. They are like a glass ball that explodes and showers everything around it with fire retardant powder when a fire breaks out. Think they are about 30 quid.

Know what you mean... I played with autos in the winter a few year back & was struggling with low temps even at lights on

Yep it's not the watts to worry about but the amps. The watts are units of power, but the amps measure resistance. The resistance in a line is what causes heat buildup.

This is why circuit breakers are rated in terms of amps.

Make sure u have a high enough amp rated circuit, but also get yourself a high rated surge protector strip.

Thanks for the advice! My garage is extremely cold but iv got a little halogen heater for now which doesn't use a great deal of electricity, so I had that turned on last night and it only took 10/15 mins to heat up so thats a bonus! I'm going to be blocking the door off with some form of insulation as that's where the cold is getting in! Il be in there everyday anyways as its attached to the house via a door thru kitchen so I can keep a close eye on the temperature
