Default What makes a good soil ?

I have seen lots of posts on what soil people like and use, however ( not being in uk ) non of the recommendations are available here so i have to go to a local garden center , so what should i be asking for? or looking for on the bag ? , and also what should i be staying away from

Where are you? In the USA the best soil is purchased online (Malibu compost potting soil) and some decent options in the grow shops (roots organic, happy frog). Garden center I just go with a local organic composted mushroom top soil and mix in some worm castings and organic milk cow shit compost and lots of perlite if I want to keep it simple.

go and find any airy soil that's good for vegetables/tomatoes in ur local diy place
try and avoid anything that has clay/sand in it

high nitrogen rating just means less feeding during veg

Ok , i the best i can find is Potting soil for Vegtables

    PH 6-7
    Blond peat 40%
    Black Peat 10%
    Clay 20%
    Humus ( vegtable origin ) 30%

the others are really low in PH or really high, one contains BIOPREM , what ever the hell that is

will do the job mate, we don't all have the luxury of growell shops
would be better with no clay though but.....

might wanna add perlite to help with drainage and aeration
