Default Any electrical gurus help on acoustic fan

    Been given a pair of accoustic fans, BAF-1500 and a BAF-2500 (8” and 10”)

The 8” works fine, the 10” how ever will only fire up if I give the turbine a little spin to get it moving then it’s fine.

The 10" should have a capacitor fitted, this is what helps startup, if capacitor is missing it wont spin itself

It would be inside the box somewhere, a plastic cylinder with 2 wires coming from it about 4" long...looking at the fan its probably not that though...could be thats its been well used and bearing could be dry making it stick on start up...

Pain in the arse to take apart though

Any idea how I’d test to see if this has gone?

Looks like its coming apart itself...if thats the case, it might have burst hence not working...only proper way to test is with an ESR/LCR meter but some cheaper multimeters have a basic capacitance check, that would do in this case, failing that, just buy another one, they're £5 Feebay No. 332027974081

Also, while its apart, does the fan look dirty around the bearing...if so give it a clean and a bit of 3-in-1 oil or similar (not wd40 )

All nice and clean inside, yea it’s 100% the capictor I opened up the 8” and used the one in that so I’ve ordered a replacement. But yes on that note I will clean and oil them both thanks mate saved a fortune here on these freebies cost me 6£ all in for a capacitor
