All my plants suck up the runoff. Always. I never drain to waste except for coco or tiny container grows.

You should probably never consider growing in a 330ml pot either to be fair...

Any clarification would be appreciated mate, but no rush I know there's a lot of work in all this.

    Think its pretty clear really

You pour the water in by hand, thats it... no letting it sit in a tray, having a wick in there or any other idea thatll stop you having to pour the water in yourself

Well I'm not the only one asking for clarification so obviously not that clear. If you have a runoff tray that you simply let fill up when you water you're quite literally still doing nothing other than pouring the water in by hand, and that's it. Nothing about any of the ideas I've heard prevents the need to pour water yourself. Water soaking back up as the medium dries out doesn't seem any more automatic to me than how it spreads through the medium when you pour it in in the first place.

Does the drainage hole HAVE to be at the bottom?

Just want to run this by the refs before I commit

I am thinking of drilling one at about the same level as where the lower part of the handle attaches to the mug.

Despite what M_C had just said about "You should never even consider letting a plant sit in its own run off!"... Sorry, M_C, but this is nearly exactly what I plan on trying.

So, the bottom of the mug gets a light-medium "packing" of coco coir, up to the sidewall drainage hole; from that upwards the medium is soil perlite mix.

The idea is that any over watering will flow out off the drainage hole, but with coco at the base, and a drainage hole drilled higher, a small reservoir is made.

Feed will be tricky, haven't decided yet on what to do, probably at the very minimal kind of levels, or solid nutrients. Yeah, the plant will be small, but it is being grown in a mug and hand watered.

I'm 100% sure this will be absolutely fine since drainage holes are optional to begin with.
If you don't have any drainage holes you can do this exact same thing but loading your mug with even more water.

I'm considering doing no drainage holes for exactly that reason. If you have a microbulator like @Gaz does you could bubble even your plain water to get more oxygen in there as well.

Comes down to common sense mate, bit of run off in a tray wouldnt be classed as auto but if you put 10L through your cup then left it sat in that run off id say itd be classed as auto...
