Default 4 pin pc fan to mains (same colours)

    Hey all,

My 120mm pc fan has four wires, only problem is they are all black so don’t know which is which.
One description I found online stated pin one was natural and pin two was the live but totally unsure.
Would any damage be done to the fan (OR ME!) if I go through each wire, connecting two from the fan to the two from the plug until I find the two that Make it spin?

    With thanks

Assuming you mean connecting to a 12v dc supply rather than the mains(!!) that should be fine mate, I've done it plenty of times and no issues.

They are the first two I tried after a looksie online and it worked.
The adaptor I tried is a 12v 2A and it’s making a slight hum, the fan is rated as 12v 0.061a.... do I need a different adaptor here? I only plan to run the one fan at 12v off it

    Regards

The fan or the power supply is humming? A pic of the power supply, if it has tech specs on it, might help but 99% chance it's compatible. Some super cheap ones can make a bit of a buzzing noise I guess.

As long as adapter is 12v or below, it will be ok, 300ma, 2A or 200A doesn't matter, fan wil only draw 61ma regardless

The hum could be bad construction, does it hum with/without the fan connected ?

Cheers for the input guys. It’s an old old adaptor so it’s likely due to age, the fans are new off the bay

I do have another supply I could check tomorrow as I’m thinking it could be as you guys have guessed. Failing that I’ll have to either buy another or find one in a charity shop perhaps

Old one is most likely the problem...transformer plates start to come apart (de-laminate) hence the buzz old ADSL broadband routers often have 12v PSUs...loads of them about...

Are charity shops allowed to accept electrical items these days ??

Lol the one in question is from an old router I think, possibly an AOL router so that gives you an idea as to its age
Thanks for the explanation regarding the buzz

As far as I know they still do, many electrical items in one of our locals haha
