Question UK Specific - What to do with roadkill?

I know that theoretically I could talk to the council or CRAPS, but both are not on my desire-ables list. So what would be the right thing for Joe-Citizen to do?

Basically, I found a couple of dead pigeons under a railway bridge as I was walking on my way to a super market. I had just voted so to see 2 dead pigeons in my path was not the most calming or reassuring experience.

They looked odd as they had both curled up but laid there on the pavement, dead. Very little blood on the pavement, and they did not seem to have struggled as in, feather condition seem absolutely fine, both just seem to have just simply passed on.

Hard to say that they were hit by trucks because they were really looking okay. Anyhow. I put them aside by the bushes and that was it. I wished I had a shovel but it would have been even more weird if I were to bury them on public land n a council run park.

So what exactly is the right thing to do?

And what if it were a pet animal? I once drove by a dead cat on the road as I was on my way to work. By the time I got back it was a unrecognisable mess on the road. I felt horrible to have not taking the body to a vet, but I was a bit scared at the time of being late for work and in hindsight, lets put it this way, nearly 20 years on I still regret not having defied work and should have taken the body to a vet.

So here's my day off on another tangent.

TBH I would have done similar & expect the bodies to have gone the next day as some carrion animal would take them...

At first sight I thought this was going to be a Do I eat or do I not.
The council near us use to tell us to put them in a grit bin .
If it's a cat or dog I'd definitely remove them from the road and place them out or harms way. Then report it in our local neighbor newsletter
Other animals I'd just leave for the crows magpies and foxes to clean up

Pigeons are basically flying rats and I'd have left them where they were. As for the cat I'd have left as well, but I might have felt bad for a second or so about it. It's not that I'm not an animal lover but if it's dead there's not a lot you can do for it really.

I think people want closure, but I am very wary of being falsely accused for causing the animal's death. If the animal was chipped then at least there is that "hope". I dunno, I can't say that I think too highly of mankind at the moment.

It's putting the owners hearts to rest for me.
Some peeps search high and low for there lost pets. Just a couple of minutes removing the animal and putting it out of harms way would mean the world to the owner.

I can see where you're coming from for closure for the owners.
