    Default Tiny black flies in Verve compost from B&Q

    Been using the Verve compost from B&Q & I got lots of tiny black flies ever since, not sure what they are exactly. Have been hoovering them up but its getting worse. Any ideas how to get rid of them? I read somewhere that you could use almond essence. Somewhere else said use bug clear ultra, the one that's on the sticks that stick in the soil?

    thanks for any help

    Hello Dupe, sounds like you may have some fungus gnats ..you can treat these successfully with some neem spraying and some yellow sticky fly traps (Damascus earth is also successful along with the neem).

    You can use neem treatment as long as your ladies are not in flower.

    You'll find two great guides here ;

    redisiel - IPM(intergrated pest management) - Clicky

    Gaz - Neem and soapnuts quick guide - Clicky

    Spray during lights on but be sure to raise your lights, then when dry you can bring them back down to avoid scorching.

    Would you be able to post a picture of the fly, or say whether it looks like this? ;

    Thanks for that IceCalibur. I should have mentioned that I have auto's & they are now in flower @ about day 35, so can't use the neem then right ? I dunno if I can get a good pick of the flies as they are really tiny, will have a go though.

    You're welcome mate, some do not like spraying neem in flower, some do not mind up until the last 3 weeks of flowering..in my opinion, it might be best at this point to get some predator mites in, which is why it's really important to find out what the bug is exactly (there are different predatory insects depending on the bug).

    Others might have a different opinion on this and may say it's still early enough to spray the neem, hold out for some more opinions and get that pic or google an image online that most looks like the insect you're seeing!
