Thumbs up Simple Hydroponics, The Wick System

The Wick System is probably the simplest hydroponic system. It is a passive system by virtue of there being no moving parts and where the nutrient solution remaining static in one place. The solution is taken out of a container and led to the plants? roots through the growing medium by capillary action, conducted through one or more wicks.Normally in this system a mixture of of various growing media are used in order to increase to the utmost their capillary capacity. This system contains conventional soil supplemented with fertilizers, with plain water in a container solely for irrigation. As this very compact hydroponic system is so versatile especially in small home gardens for growing in small spaces as it can be set up on a very small scale. This system?s biggest limitation occurs with large plants which need large amounts of water which the wicks are unable to supply in adequate amounts. In this case, the number of wicks has to be increased to supply demand for water!Of course adding pumps would be advantages but this is just an example of the simplest method you can add your own thoughts and idea's at any stage.

    WICK SYSTEM

The Wick system is by far the simplest type of hydroponic system. This is a passive system, which means there are no moving parts. The nutrient solution is drawn into the growing medium from the reservoir with a wick. Free plans for a simple wick system are available (click here for plans).
This system can use a variety of growing medium. Perlite, Vermiculite, Pro-Mix and Coconut Fiber are among the most popular.
The biggest draw back of this system is that plants that are large or use large amounts of water may use up the nutrient solution faster than the wick(s) can supply it.

The wick system is the simplest of all hydroponic systems. It has no moving parts, and consists of a plastic nursery pot with some wood chips,or perlite,or pea gravel,or grow rocks or other medium, a plastic bucket, and a wick. It is best to use a bucket that once held food products, or a new one. The wicks can be made from any old cotton cloth. An old cotton "t" shirt cut into 2 inch wide strips long enough to reach from the bottom of the bucket to the top of the pot works well. Put 2 or 3 wicks in the medium, out the holes in the bottom of the pot to the bottom of the bucket. Add nutrient to the bucket until the level is slightly below the bottom of the pot. Plant some seed touching one of the wicks and watch it grow. Any number of things can be substituted for the pot and bucket shown above.

    Bucket, pot, and wicks.

    Insert wicks,add cypress chips

    Add nutrient and seed

Yes you could easily mate, but it's not the best practical method around.

Wouldn't the air pump constitute a moving part?

    As hotboxfox said,

    is the air pump necessary?
As i'm planning a grow using this method, side by side with a soil grow outdoors and compare.

Its to keep the reservoir oxygenated as in normal hydro setups.
Whether thats necessary or not I couldn't tell you but I think its ertainly beneficial to keep the nute solution moving and not stale. I'm guessing if left then certain nute parts may sink to the bottom if just left.

Well it would definitely give it a big boost.
If you're using chemical nutes (and def not organic) you could always add some oxyplus to you solution if you absolutely can't deal with an airstone/pump. And stir it now and then to keep it well mixed.
