If your using normal tubes or are getting standard bulbs then these reference numbers will come in handy...

Numeric color code : Color Approximate : Colour Rendering Index : Color temperature (K)

    Halophosphate tubes
    27 : Warm white : 50–79 : 2700K
    33 : Cool white : 50–79 : 4100K
    83 : Medium warm white : 80 : 3000K
    84 : Cool white (high CRI) : 80 : 4100K

    Tri-phosphor tubes
    827 : Warm white : ~85 : 2700K
    835 : White : ~85 : 3500K
    841 : Cool white : ~85 : 4100K
    850 : Sunlight : ~85 : 5000K
    865 : Cool daylight : ~85 : 6500K
    880 : Skywhite : ~85 : 8000K

    Multi-phosphor tubes
    927 : Warm white : ~95 : 2700K
    941 : Cool white : ~95 : 4100K
    950 : Sunlight : ~98 : 5000K
    965 : Cool daylight : ~95 : 6500K

So an 865 or 965 "Cool Daylight" could be used for Veg and 827 or 927 "Warm white" could be used for flower.

I found a useful site that has some technical papers on lighting system http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/programs/nlpip/index.asp

There's even a page where it compares the efficiency to other light sources, its heavy reading but interesting.

    High Wattage CFL's

    HID lamps

Hmmnn I can get an 8000k CFL or two for free (from work) would they be ok to use? I see them in that list but I dont know if they'd be ok?

I want to grow Cheese or Purple wreck ukel. but I dont want to burn their bollocks off, so which is the best for them and is it 8000k for Veg then 2500k for Flowering or wha?

HIDs are prone to breaking if you touch the glass too cus their ghey! The oil in your skin causes a hot spot (I work around car spares especially halogen/HID bulbs and kits so I'm repeating my self with every customer xD)

    yes you are correct.

Any CFL has grow potential. But, if you have the Room and cash, go HPS. if not CFL's are more than adequate.

    good luck.

Wicked thread... been a cfl grower for a few years now.

Just about to take the plunge into HPS.... my new cupboard is 1.8m high by 0.6 width and 0.6 depth, got extraction and fan setup.....

do you reckon thats a large enough space for a 400watt bulb.

cause the space is tall and thin wanna grow upwards rather then outwards. two plants in 11lte square pots. My 300w CFL dual, which i cherish just cant penetrate through the canopy!

Can someone recommend some good bulbs to use in this kind of setup? I've done a couple grows with normal household Phillips CFL's 11 - 23w. They alway's say on the box not to use with a timer so I end up having to do it manually, is it actually unsafe to use them with a timer? has anybody come accross any higher wattage ones that have a standard bayounet fitting and are safe to use with timers? I'm a paranoid fecker, cheers
