Why is a sea of green so much better with CFL's over HPS?

that depends on the size of your set-up

    it is not .
what is true though is that cfl's do not have the penetration of hps lights so you will get better top bud growth from a sog than growing a tall plant where the lower buds will not be as dense with a cfl.
if you're retired or you ain't got a job and you ain't growing and smoking weed ,i don't know what the fuck you are doing!

Fantastic OP and thread, thanx very much.

Here's a novice question: If you have both blue and red CFL's with the idea of using blue for vegging and red for flowering, is there any advantage in mixing them and using some red in with the blue during vegging?

I wouldn't think so, think about it logically. Blue = Veg, Red = Flowering so mixing them would take energy away from producing buds to growing the plant larger which is something you don't want. You need your plants to direct there full energy to producing buds whereas blue would take that away and only give you 50% of the 100% needed in flowering and producing higher consentrations of THC.

However I may be wrong but I don't think so

using both lights has the advantage of extra lumens and wider light spectrum which is what they get outside - plus.you can do a complete grow with either light.
it is the hours of light that are the major factor of veg or flowering, things like too much nitrogen can cause leafy looking growth but the light schedule will tell the plant when to veg or flower.

That would be true of mixing in blue with red during flowering but I was more interested in mixing in some red with the blue during veg. I wondered if this would help a squat plant grow taller.
