Light quality decays with distance, so distant bulbs are bad. Temperature increases with distance, so close bulbs are bad.

The thread attempts to find a happy medium between the two based on the bulb you're using.

Not that I know of but CFL is usually about 3 inch but can be closer with a fan blowing on the bulb/plants.
