or do i need to get a controller and lower it??

You might be ok running that pump without a controller but its best to ask someone with more knowledge on NFT as i've never used a NFT system before.
it depends on the growing medium....i use nft method with clay pellets with GREAT success using 24hr watering this is my nft system that ive invented thats been working unbelievably well for me the only adjustments ive made is to add an airstone to the resevoir dont know why people like to make things difficult just remember K.I.S.S is the greatest key to growing well
