    Default Stretchy Scrog Advice

I got a super stretchy strain (Psychosis) and am looking to tame it with a scrog setup. From 2 previous grows I know that the plants will at least triple in size during a vigorous stretch so my plan was for 8 plants in 6l airpots in a modded wilma (kudos to user 'The G is Stoned') and only veg them for 1 - 2 weeks therefore filling the 1mē screen mainly with the stretch. Veg will be done under a 600w mh in a 1m parabolic changing to a 600w hps for flower. I plan to lst them early to direct them to the area of the screen I need them to fill and then supercrop any runaway branches during the stretch to keep growth as uniform as possible.

Just really looking for opinions from experienced scroggers as this is my first attempt at one and could do with the advice.

    Cheers

    Dr G..

I managed to fill a screen with only 2 weeks veg with 3 plants in a metre. The seeds were Sat dom and by the end of their life would have hit > 8ft. I was getting a bit panicky about 5 weeks in, they were getting massive! At the 11/12 week stage all I could say was /drool.

Surely 8 plants in 6l pots would be easier for Sog? Seems a lot of plants for a metre? less it is one plant per?

Air pots are the bomb, I have used them now in every grow and like you am down to the 6l size, all that fucking around re potting? nah. cradle to grave 6l pots ftw.

    Update....

Cheers Azza but by the time you posted I was well underway so heres the latest..

I vegged the ladies for three weeks, going fairly heavy on the lst'ing then flipped them to 12/12 as the first tops came through the screen ( 12" above pot). I stopped training them under the screen a couple of days ago and now, at day 16 of 12/12, the taller tops are sitting 4-5" above the screen. The stretching is definately slowing now and I think it'll finish about the 7-8" mark which was what I was aiming for. The only training I'm doing now is to try and make sure any bud site that can get light, gets it.

Being honest, it probably did get a bit hectic at times with the training and maybe 6 or 4 plants with a bit of topping would have been a better idea but all in all, I'm fairly happy with the outcome as the majority of the holes on the ScrOG net have buds or tops in them. Once they stop stretching, I'll thin out the canopy a bit to allow light to the buds forming close to the screen. Once I've done this I'll post up a pic or two.

    Meanwhile, a couple of pics...

My setup with the sorry looking clones in it..

My first ScrOG in all its glory..

The bare bits of screen at the front are down to two of the plants not rooting as well as the others but they pulled through and did their bit.

    Under the screen..

You can see the front two 'strugglers' are clearly underdeveloped compared to the rest. There's also a bit of tidying up still to do

Now for a couple showing the distribution of the bud sites..

As you can see the buds are not as uniform as I would've like but all in all I'm fairly pleased with the outcome of the training as it was a first attempt. Any questions, feel free to ask.

    update no. 2

after much reading on the subject of leaves (and still not having a definite answer), i decided not to thin out the canopy as early as i had planned. Instead i tucked the leaves away as much as i could but i now plan to basically strip the leaves one week from the chop to get some light further down and try and bring on the smaller lower buds.

As for the final outcome of the training, the pushier tops ended up bigger than the 7-8" i had planned and some finished up about 13" above the screen. Its all good though and im very pleased with the outcome.

A few weeks still to go but i can say that the scrogs advantages far outweigh the work that has to be put in. Being honest, i enjoyed the training and found it interesting to see how the plant reacts to it. Will definitely be trying a scrog again and plan to do 6 lemon haze next time round. Itching to try this method with an indica dom strain and have white rhino mothering just now for clones at some point.

    some pics.....(sorry about the quality)

    the final outcome...

and for anyone thinking of modding the wilma, some tasty root porn...

i used lst'ing for the first time with this grow and i can safely say that i will be doing that for every grow from now on. The results are fantastic and doesnt set back your veg time like topping or fimming. i used bendz for this and while they might not have the precision you get with tying your plants back, they worked well enough for me.

    final couple of pics...

    bendz...

and a gnarly looking stem created with them

I found that before i started this grow i could find very little info on a sativa dom scrogs so i hope this thread helps somebody in the future. feel free to get in touch if you have any questions. im no master scrogger by any means but having one under the belt means i might be able to help.

I'll post up a final weight once chopped dried and cured.

    happy growing guys...

cheers wah wah. gotta be honest, i wasnt entirely sure what i was doing with the lst'ing but just blundered on regardless. Its the only way to really learn and like i said, im happy with the results and will never let another plant grow as nature intended. Much more fun doing it this way

and good luck with the grow off with spoons....im tuned in for that one

    Ok. Final update....

Final dried weight came in at between 17― and 18oz. This was 1― to 2oz better than previous my previous attempt with 8 psychosis plants. i used a booster called Bud XL with this grow but I dont feel this did much to improve the size of the bud but it definitely has a sweeter smell and taste. I think the extra yield was more down to the scrog and although it requires a bit more attention during the grow, i found the harvest easier to deal with this time round. This coupled with the extra yield means i will be doing more scrogs in the future. TBH i found it good fun anyway.

The 8 plants was deinitely too many and this time round im going with just 4 psychosis from the same mother. Im gonna veg them longer this time and hopefully i should get bigger, fatter buds. Because im using the same setup and will be using the same booster (only coz i got some left), it will be a good test to see if less really is more.

Im tempted by the thought of posting up a diary but dont know if i can be arsed. If i do ill drop a link in this thread for anyone thats interested.

Peace out and lucky growing guys

cheers mate, although it was more blind luck than anything

you're spot on with the scrog work ethic and its definitely worth the effort if you can make time for it.

i'll be cutting clones this weekend for my next grow so i'll get to work next week on something that resembles a diary. cant promise it'll be a contender for diary of the year but ill do my best to make it informative and like i said, i'll drop a linky into this thread when it kicks off.

Ive always been interested in doing a scrog grow.

I like to see them like that first pic flat to the screen, pretty inspiring.

What are those alien like pots you have them in mate ?,do those spikes serve a purpose ?.

They're called airpots and the inward pointing spikes direct the roots towards the holes where they get air pruned. this encourages new growth rather than the spiralling effect you would get with a normal pot. I've finished one grow with them and the root structure was fantastic.

Out of interest I was just wondering how high you got your scrog?

I've currently got my first scrog on the go and screen height does seem to vary. I've got mine 14" high.

I did plan to veg mine for a good 5+ weeks as I want massive plants!

my screen sits 12" above the pots. I suppose it doesn't really matter but you gotta think of getting access under it for trimming etc.

for my latest grow, I vegged 4 plants for 5 weeks and came out with a very similar effect to what you see above but i think the buds are gonna be bigger this time...hopefully.

good luck with the scrog mate, its well worth the effort in the end
