Default Useful Tips Thread for beginners

Please use this thread to add any useful growing or grow room tips that would be to the benefit to THCtalk forum members

    This was forest's idea..

Right..I have seen some posts that are going towards some petty arguments and and I will delete any post that I think will cause any bickering..

Please keep it to a good standard and lets carry on with helping beginners etc..

The most common/abundant photosynthetic pigments in a plant, chlorophyll A and B. The absorption spectra for chlorophyll A is both at 400-450nm (violet to blue) and at 650-700nm (near-red to deep red) while chlorophyll B peaks at 450-500nm and 600-650nm. So, while red is essential to flowering, it is also necessary for vegging. It also happens to be absorbed less efficiently by plants, hence the increased need for red lighting during flowering

What we have now are grow lights that are optimized for full-cycle plant growth; from vegetative growth to flowering. Keeping things simple, light from the blue end of the spectrum is necessary for vegetative growth - making for strong, healthy plants with thick foliage. In contrast, red light is necessary for flowering and fruiting - producing large, dense buds along all of the nodes that were created, in part, by the blue lights. Remember though, it is not advisable to use single color grow lights (i.e. all blue for veg, all red for flowering) because you need a balance for the entire growth cycle.

1 tip i have got (not for the experiended) but dilute your ph solution before adding, get 2 litres of water and add maybe 30ml of ph down acid so yuo get a weaker solution, then use this as yuor ph down, using raw acid can take you down much lower than you want so diluted stuff makes life easier to bring ph down

Calibration Solutions should be stored in a cool place out of direct sun and heat. They should be stored with the lids securely tightened. Not replacing the lid after use will result in evaporation which causes the salt content in the solution to rise decreasing the validity of the solution.

Leave leaves alone! Removal of healthy leaves hacks up a healthy plant.Removing large fan or shade leaves DOES NOT make plants more productive. This practise DOES NOT supply more light to smaller leaves and growing tips. Plants need all there leaves to produce the maximum amount of chlorophyll and food. Removing leaves slows Chlorophyll production, stresses the plant, and stunts its growth. Stress is a growth inhibitor, Remove only dead leaves or leaves that are 50% damaged.

Plants grow poorly above 75F and below 55F Precise controll of temperature and humidity are essential to rapid, healthy growth.Plants have 5 basic needs,Air 20%,Light 20% ,Water 20%.Nutrients 20% & Grow medium,20% each accounts for 20% of a plants ability to grow to its maximum potential,If only one of the needs arrives at 15% all growth growth is impaired equally(15% x 5 = 75%) If two or more of the basic needs are not meet, growth slows quickly,Even with the best systems and nutrients money can buy,in a garden where relative-air humidity is 80% when it should be 50% Growth will be limited. No nutrients will make a difference if you dont get these these elements of you grow right.

The water should be room temperature, or as close as possible in temperature to the air around your plants. When the water is too cold, it chills the roots, causing leaves to curl down as the water is absorbed into the plant. Also, if watering from the top, cold water can cause leaf spotting. Such spots represent a form of necrosis and, as such, cannot be removed. (Note: Whether the water is the correct temperature or not, it is always important not to get water on the leaves. The only exception to this is when you are spray misting for purposes of quick-feeding or increasing the humidity around your plants. Such misting will not leave behind the large water droplets which, when exposed to the sun, will produce brown spots on the leaves.)

Never use soft water. Soft water increases the saline content. This will alter both the pH and the electrical conductivity of the soil, thereby diminishing your African Violet's ability to absorb water and nutrients. If you have soft water, you may be able to divert water before it reaches the softening unit. If not, you will need to seek an alternative source of water.

Avoid using highly chlorinated water. While some chlorine is actually necessary for photosynthesis to occur, i.e., 70-100 ppm. Such minute traces in the water will not be discernible by smell. In fact, if you can smell chlorine, then your water has too much. The consequences of using water with too much chlorine in it include leaf burn and diminished flowering. If you have highly chlorinated water, and no alternative source is available, dispense water into a container and let stand overnight to allow the chlorine gas to escape.

another 1 i can mention, i see a lot of magnesium defficiencys on here, befre you add epson salts , (DO NOT ADD SALTS BEFOE YOU CHECK PH AND MAKE SURE ITS WITHIN RANGE OF ABSORBING THEM) or you,ll have more problems
