My tip, when using fertilizers always start off using lower than stated concentrations as its much easier to add more if needed than to remove any excess.

    Soil Growers

Start mixing your soils well in advance of the grows. Get all your amendments (lime, vermiculite, perlite, sand, lavarock), foodstuffs (wormcasts, guano, bonemeal, Fish and blood meal, seaweed meals) and beneficials (trychoderma, mychorrhiza ) mixed in a couple of weeks beforehand. This will give the soil plenty of time to stabilise, reduce nute-hot-spots and get activated ready for the plants. Keep it dark and covered until your ready to use it.

I'm starting my first grow. I got a seed from a bag of blue cheese, planted it and set it up in an improvised grow room in my tv stand. Now it's about a month later and the blue cheese is 5 nodes high and I just fimmed it. There was an incident where my cfl fell and burned the plant overnight. There was obvious slowing of growth after that. I have been feeding the plant with sparkling water and am going to switch to molasses water starting tomorrow. If anyone has some advice for me or even critiques I would love to hear any imput.

yeah i agree companys will say to have an ec at 1.6ec but this is when your plant is at 2ft tall and it can take it usually a good way through its grow but when your starting of seedlins young plants will need alot less ,alot of grower's do 1/2 strength moving upto 3/4 strength i've started at .2 above tapwater ec and building up from there..

Good garden centres such as B&Q and Homebase, sell ceramic stands for flower pots, these allow water drainage and are also pretty cheap

With soil grown plants water slowly enough that you see the water absorbed by the soil and don't let it pool onto the top and then rush through and leak out of the bottom and down the sides.

I agree with anonymiss, along with the fact that you dont have to worry about mites, knatts, spiders, deer rabbits and whatever other pests you have in your area.
