They'll grow up, age, then die just like any other annual plant

If you let them go too far you'll end up with a really 'mongy' smoke as the THC will have turned to CBD.

Never done it myself, and not about to any time soon

It'd be best to follow the guideline times for the auto you've got, then start closely inspecting the trichomes. They'll need to be clear for a short lived rushy high, cloudy for a nice stone, and amber for a shut-up-and-pin-you-to-the-setee stone. Every person has different tastes, and every strain has subtly different highs, it's down to you to find which suits you best.
