Default Cannabis laws set to be reviewed

From prime ministers question time today

The laws covering cannabis could be toughened up, Gordon Brown has said.

The prime minister told MPs that a consultation on regrading cannabis as a class B drug, rather than class C, is set to be launched next week.

Cannabis was downgraded to class C - which includes things such as anabolic steroids - from class B, which includes things like amphetamines, in 2004.

Mr Brown said the Cabinet had discussed the issue and announced the entire UK drugs strategy was to be reviewed.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith will publish a consultation document next week about the UK drugs strategy.

Mr Brown told MPs at prime minister's questions: "She will be asking the public to comment on new ways in which we can improve drugs education in the country, give support to people undergoing treatment... and give support for communities who want to chase out drug dealers from their communities."

He was responding to a question from Labour MP Martin Salter who, referring to the medicinal use of cannabis, urged a drugs policy that did not "criminalise the sick but tackles the drugs that do the most harm".

The issue of downgrading - or even decriminalising - cannabis - has proved controversial and has already been reviewed once by the Home Office.

they might raise the class to b, then let people have a couple of plants each for personal use to "drive the dealers out"....

that would be so sweet,,,, not gonna happen thoo... but its a logical solution!

It was bound to happen at some point though.

Not exactly gonna solve any problems is it.

round and round we go in the big circle that is prohibition.

    Lets hope it don't happen.

    Bollocks.

I swear they already did this and the review's conclusion was that it should stay class C?

    Exactly, i couldn't agree more.

I was watching Midlands today a few months ago, they showed loads of uniformed police officers, trashing plants. They just looked so stupid.
