    Default Enough light?

Hi folks, just a quick question; My mates got a 1.2 x 1.2 x 2m grow tent, he currently has a 400w dual spec HPS, I realise that a 600w would be better but could he add 2 125w cfl's instead, save him buying new ballast etc. Would this be OK?

    Cheers

    So, 1.44 m²...

Recommended lumen range for flowering: 79,200 to 155,520 (based on 55,000 to 108,000 lux, where higher is better).

400 Watt HPS is around 55,000 lumens.

    Shortfall: 24,200 to 100,520 lumens.

125 Watt compact fluorescent is maybe 6,000 lumens (usually between 5,000 and 8,500).

If you're using those you'll need to add a few to get to the minimum recommeded level... At least four... And as many as 17 to hit the top end!

Swapping to a 600 Watt HPS would still be at the low end (around 88,000 lumens). If it were me I'd be aiming to add 600 Watts (for a total of about 143,000 lumens), not swap it for the 400. Twin 400s (totalling around 110,000 lumens) would probably be OK if power/heat is an issue.

If you're wedded to using fluorescent then tubes would be a better bet than compacts. A 125 Watt compact will only provide around 48 to 50 lumens per Watt, but T8s give more like 75 to 93, and T5 HE (not HO) can be between 86 and 93.

sorry i read that wrong , i,d only use a 400w in 1m sq area at the most but you might get away with 1.2 m without too much stretching
