Tabbatip #4:
I retract my earlier claim about hardwater being the most important consideration in soil growing. That's stupid, and obviously the rantings of a lunatic.
THIS is the most relevant soil-growing Tabbatip:
Don't grow cannabis in soil in an urban area without a carbon filter or ozone generator.
And this is why it's not worth the risk:
You may think your low-odour strains won't smell but it will to some degree. Your nose gets used to it if you smoke or grow. It's called 'acclimatisation'. If you smoke tobacco either yourself or if someone else smokes in the house the weed's being grown in, the chemicals in tobacco temporarily wipe-out certain ranges of smell-sense that would normally pick up a near-identical enzyme found in both cannabis and tobacco plants. Where we could never detect that, A non smoker of either would normally notice that. Especially the filth who are trained to notice certain smells.
Further to this if you're asking other members about carbon filters on a forum.. it's
CRITICAL to understand and accept that every human nose is capable of smelling at different ranges.. so what may be biologically undetectable by one person (because the smell is out of their range of detection) could well stink to high heaven to another person. In other words, if member X can't smell it.. does that necessarily mean that Neighbour Y or Police officer Z can't, too?
Even when your mates who come over and A) can't smell it either because they smoke and/or B) don't want to be the ones to go against the grain and tell you you're at risk for growing without one, it's still going to be releasing odour at some time or other. Maybe not when the lights are on so much, but when they go off the stink increases a lot. On warm days the smell rises. On humid days the same. We cannot be in control of those environmental changes while we're at work or out somewhere else. So what happens when the conditions hit perfect ranges for the smell to bolt out of the tent? We can't control that properly without a CF or OZG.
Different nutrients and soils also have a MASSIVE impact on the smell of a plant.. contrary to common belief it isn't just about the strain that determines smell and in fact, is less about the strain than the growing nutrient and media.
You may well hear some growers say that "
I grow northern lights and can't ever smell them".. but how are they growing them? Let's say they're using chemical nutrients that kill off most of the essential oil production so that their plants smell LESS than others. But what happens when you decide to use organic nutrients or batmix soil that promotes essential oil production and makes
your northern lights reek?
I was once assured by several members that I could and should grow NL without a CF.
Unfortunately I had to bin mine 3 weeks into veg because mine STANK. That's because those other growers weren't growing theirs in batmix like I was, and nobody thought of that at the time.
Will the other growers' luck and experience be a good defence shortly after the police raid your house? That's what I always ask myself after the above-mentioned fiasco with my stinking northern lights.
All cannabis plants smell. This is not opinion it is an absolute indisputable scientific fact, because ALL plant-life has a smell of some kind. There is no such thing as a plant that does not smell. At least, not that we have ever found on this planet.
All plants with fan leaves, certainly, transpire (sweat) and when that happens the particles of water released contain plant residue, just like human sweat smells differently according to our diet.
It's not just the fan leaves that smell. If you're growing in soil your soil, roots and nutrients will also smell and that can be just as big an indicator of a grow as the smell of weed. Think about that. Think about and research the science behind plants and what makes them smell. They
have to smell by the very nature of what they are and how they work. Grow them under HID lighting in a confined area and the smell increases for any plant, too.
The only variable is how much they'll smell and at what times of the day and under which specific environmental conditions they'll smell the least and the most.
But a cannabis plant that does not have any smell - even in early veg - is a cannabis plant that exists only in the imagination of its grower.
Be safe amigos.
