Default Tip of the day: Write to the DVLA now!

On Wednesday I got cut up while driving in the car on my way to work. As you do I raised my hand in a "what the fuck?!" kind of way, about a 3/10 of the most extreme road rage I have had.

So anyway this van pulls level so I just carry on, making an effort to not look as the van as wasn't a massive thing and then I pulled in front and then when we get to some lights I see behind there is three big lads in this van. The lights turn red and I see the driver getting out! Luckily the next lane was a little free and I bombed it for the rest of the way!

However, and this is the point of the story, I call up the DVLA and say that I want to make sure they dont give out any details (these peeps were crazy and was three of them so could easily got my plate when following) and they tell me:

"Well can wont get give you details out over the phone.... but anyone can write to us and for a fee get the details of where anyone lives from the reg plate. You can however write into the DVLA and if you state that under no conditions can your details be released then you are protected.

Now, if your on this forum you probably grow or at least smoking a lot of green and so I think you should take every precaution you to protect yourself. As such I have sent a letter special delivery and re-registered my car 300 miles away at someone I know (family).

I highly recommend you get a letter in the post to them, just to be safe.

You can only do it in writing mate. I explained that someone might try and hunt me down to break my legs and they still wouldn't do it over the phone.

Chill, you reckon they'd Write to the DVLA for your details? I don't! They'll jus look out for your car while out and about! Its a good idea to ask for them not to give out your details but it could mess up your insurance registering at a diff address.... couldn't it?
Don't park outside your house for a bit till its all cooled down is my suggestion! just in case!
    Easy now! Steppa.

If my insurance ask Ill expain, as long as my insurance is to my current address not a problem. I know the police still can but it shocks and sickens me that anyone can, for a fee get your details.

The only pro of insurance being such a rip off is that I put my car in my Mum's name.

Would be a right little earner sitting outside grow shops taking reg's down, call DVLA and then kick off a door and steal a crop. Can easily see some debauched bastards pulling that off

    Cheers for heads up btw.

i wouldn't worry mate, i doubt they would be clever enough to write to the dvl a all over a bit of road rage. just keep a bat in ur car next time just incase. i got car jacked 2 years ago at gunpoint so I'm really careful and also prepared these days lol

Very useful mate; worth noting that I doubt most people would write to the DVLA asking for your address if they planned to assault you and leave a massive footprint with that letter. It does really surprise me that they can give your details out though. It makes no sense to provide them to anyone other than the police or an insurance company if you were suspected of being involved in an accident.

Except that in very specific circumstances it does make sense.

For instance, when buying a vehicle it might allow the prospective purchaser to find out who the current registered keeper is, or the names and addresses of previous keepers.

You do need to prove that you have 'reasonable cause' to ask for any information though. You can find out what sort of things constitute 'reasonable cause', and the evidence required, here (PDF): http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum.../dg_193598.pdf

ithe joys of modern inner city life pmsl the soke can sometimes play trix on your head and thats what is happening with you thinking worst case scenario the road rage bozos will write to dvla for your details.....
1.do you think they can write?
2.do you think if they could write they would spend precious beer tokens on writing to dvla? if they were that serious about getting you they would have done so on the day surely?
3.what exactly did you do? genuinely just the raised hand gesture or was it the classic 2 fingers shaped like a pistol? pmsl skin up a fat 1 and let these wannabees get on with it, if they are looking for trouble i bet they have found it by now.
