Came across some interesting info about the strains used by GW Pharma in relation to Sativex.
It seems that their chief breeder is none other than Sam The Skunkman and their initial grows are therefore probably based around his skunk#1.
Article confirming the purchase of Sam The Skunkman's current genetics (and all his future creations) by GWP:

Article confirming the importation to USA of skunk#1 seeds from Sam's company:

The 2nd article contains this quote...
Materials and methods
Plant growth and gland isolation
Seeds from the marijuana cultivar Skunk no. 1 were provided
by HortaPharm BV (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
and imported under a US Drug Enforcement Administration
(DEA) permit to a registered controlled substance research
facility. Plants were grown under hydroponic conditions in
a secure growth chamber yielding cannabinoid levels in
mature plants as reported in Datwyler and Weiblen (2006).
An interesting thought that occurred to me on reading the 2nd article was that it would appear to debunk the old G13 myth. It makes little sense to engineer a super plant such as G13 and then ignore it in favour of some skunk#1 beans bought online from the Dam!
One other thing worthy of note is that Israel announced back in July that it had created a medical strain called Avidekel which has around 16% CBD and negligible amounts of THC. Afraid there isn't enough info on it yet to determine if Sam The Skunkman had a hand in its creation but it bodes well for medical MJ that the thc can be bred out, as that could lead to a plant that is not illegal. Something which would surely allow much more research by removing the current red tape.
